Well, looks wise it is subjective. In the 70's almost everyone thought massive flares looked better. Same with platform shoes and big lapels. So I don't care what the vast majority think as in a few years they will have changed their mind while mine will have remained the same. In any case I'm not so bothered about aesthetics, but I definitely don't want big shiny 'look at me' wheels.

I went the other way to you. I have a set of 17 ATS DTC's on mine with 205/45 front 235/40 rear. There's a lot of grip, but so much you can't really explore the handling on a public road. It's just more fun at road speeds on the 15's and less crashy. I recently acquired a second set of 15's with summer tyres having driven a friends car with them and it was more fun still. I didn't buy the car for its comfort.

If you look at Lotus cars they rarely have big rubber on and they're known as top chassis engineers. In fact most chassis engineers find it a challenge to get big wheels to work and they only have them because the marketing guys want them.

Anyway, if you're happy that's all that matters. I hope you enjoy them. They do look quite nice, but just wouldn't be my choice, but celebrate the difference!

I totally agree with you, if you like small wheels, you should have them regardless of what majority thinks. I like small wheels too, 13" steelies looked grate on fiat 124, I just think our cars doesn't have that retro look more suitable for small tires.

"vast majority of people would find lower profile tires and bigger wheels (within reason) more attractive."

Whilst wheel size is subjective, I think we should stick to the realms of reality.  I was just wondering, how many people did you canvass out of the world population of 82 billion to be able to assert that rather sweeping statement :D ?

I was just going by the general trend in the auto industry, they don't offer more desirable and more expensive cars with smaller wheels do they? The same goes to aftermarket wheel sales, most people buy bigger wheels rather that smaller. Haven't seen anyone spec their m3s, 991 gt3 rss or f458s in smaller wheels. There are odd people as commented here, but you need to be blind not to see the trend..

Because firstly it would often be silly to go smaller, and certainly in terms of the somewhat performance cars mentioned, bigger wheels are often needed to house bigger brakes ( needed because faster cars, and definitely heavier cars )

So smaller in all regards is simply not an option whilst maintaining performance/reliability etc etc

But, everyone can do whatever pleases them, for whatever reasons they choose.

Except that "stance" type, bullshit, it's just retarded.

Filling in the wheel arches is also stupid.

The most stupid are people specing big wheels on their electric cars, knowing as they do the extra electricity they're consuming and the shorter range they're having. Doing that they look both vain and stupid.

Is there a good secondhand supply of the OEM 15" in Switzerland? I don't think I've ever seen a set come up for sale in the UK.

No. I was very lucky to find a set on the German forum for a reasonable price shortly after I bought the car - long time ago now. Without them I wouldn't be able to drive the car in winter.

Then a friend of mine sold his VX and gave me his 15"s.

So very, very lucky to find two sets.

I do wonder though if they're just Astra wheels? They look the same.

Vauxhall's tended to have quite a high ET, typically close to 45-50mm.

The VX220 seems quite a way away from that, although that could be worked with via spacers if that's the sort of thing needed.
