So had my shocks changed all round yesterday and found that the abs light came on and speedo wasn't working at all. So today I took it back and had the NSR wheel off to have a look at the wire and connections and it had been... Well, bodged together pretty bad. So cut a section of wire out and replaced with a new bit and speedo is back working but does flicker every now and again. Abs light also keeps coming on and off after turning the ignition on and off. Any suggestions? Re-wire etc.

I had the same problem last week, I got hold of an ABS wire from an Astra G (£5) and replaced as much of the old wire as I could - the Astra wire is much tougher properly sheathed cable. My car was also stalling all the time - the new wire fixed it.

I should have said that the Astra cable has the correct plug moulded onto it so it will eliminate that problem - I think you can check the section from the plug to the hub with a multimeter and spinning the wheel(?)

I got mine from a local Vauxhall specialist. There are a few on eBay for a tenner - just search for Astra g abs cable or try a breakers yard.

Anyone else had this trouble. Would it be worth giving the abs fuse a check?

New hub. Get OP-COM on there and find out if there's an issue at more than one corner of the car.

Happened to me again the other day, the ABS wire has perished for the second time, easy fix though.

Did you just bridge the wire or get a whole new section and loom etc.

Re soldered the wire as one broke, then heat wrapped the wire, then taped it up and put the original plastic outer casing back on.

Thanks mate. Just ordered some wire so going to get the wheel off and probably have a go at the weekend. Plenty of tape!

Hi Gents,

A vx owner (or opel speedster as it was called when I bought it in Holland), I've now happily imported it inot Spain and enjoying far more rain free days with the kumho semi sliks.

Anyway I'm not very mechanical but here goes, my ABS light is not flickering like many below but my speedo does not work and I also notice that the radio auto volume (used to get louder when i was going faster) also doesnt work.

they both work very occassional if I hit a good bump (used to take smaller bumps) but that has almost stopped too, so big guess at a loose plug/connection or a wire finally giving up.

Can someone please explain to me where physically to find 'the abs wire' mentioned below in many posts?

Or does anyone know where else I can look to solve this?

Rgds,

Alistair

Abs sensor has gone or the wiring is perished. It is a small connector behind the drivers side front wheel I think. Check connections. Auto volume....no idea on that one.

Sounds like your nearside rear (probably the drivers side rear in a LHD car) ABS sensor is the problem as that obviously provides a signal for the ABS and the speedo. It's usually just a corroded wire in the loom somehwere between the wheel speed sensor in the wheel hub and the main wiring harness connection in the wheel arch. OEM stereo had a speed sensitive volume. No idea how that picked up a speed signal but sounds like it's all connected.

auto volume is fed by the speed signal...
