Anyone know what type of battery they take and where I can get them ? Is it a trip to the Vauxhall Parts Dept and pay their inflated prices ?

Nothing special about the batteries. Prise the unit open and go buy similar.

I was a partsman at a VX/Audi dealer when I was 17/18. Customers would come to the front counter for us to replace batteries in their keys/fobs. I'd take them through the back, jump through the hatch to the workshop, jog along to the rover dealer who stocked them, check them out, fit them then charge them out at a markup on a nice Audi or VW headed paper receipt depending on which side they'd come into. Just don't buy this sort of thing from dealers. There's no need and you're asking to be fisted for it.

Is the key supposed to have a little light in it which the button operates? Mine definitely has a button that woudn't be needed for the immobilser to work and it has what looks like two filaments in a little hole pointing forwards. I know I don't need it but if it is a bulb then mines broke and thus annoys me.

Could it be swapped for an LED?

Would be a bit fiddly but yes you could quite easily do that. I have fitted a very bright one into my alternative flip key casing.
