After a long journey I notice a strange noise from the engine. Sounds like a bearing going.
Took v belt off and noise disappears. Replaced belt tensioner but still a problem so have ordered new idler pulley. This is bolted onto a bracket, but the bolt has some sort of plastic cover over it. Any ideas on how to remove this? I assume it is there for a purpose so I don't want to wreck it when I take it off.
Any ideas?
If it isn't the pulley will need a new alternator. Has anyone bought the ones on ebay which are from Germany? They are less than £70 and seem a bit of a bargain.

Update
Replaced idler pulley and although there was a lot of play in the bearing it the noise is till there!
Looks like I will have to replace the alternator.
HAs anyone fitted those cheap ones from Germany that re on ebay? Really tempted to get one as when I go to Vauxhall there are usually no parts in the UK and they order them in from Germany or Spain!

I think I also have a knackered pulley bearing on the alternator. It's only appeared though since fitting an Underdrive Pulley so I've removed the tensioner and idler pulley.
I'm totally guessing its the pulley as I also did a service. Just praying that its not Turbo troubles. My noise is a slight chinking at constant speeds and more of a grinding noise under hard acceleration. Was gonna try and fit my go pro in there this week to see if I could capture it to diagnose.
Are you a Turdo or an NA?
