Hi All, I am a new owner of a VX220, got it last Friday, love the car, it is great, apart from the speakers/sound system can anyone recommend any speakers for the vx? Thanks Vespillo :D

if you do a search there are some recent discussions on this. I think the conclusion is that the speakers are good enough for the standard vdo stereo -just changing the speakers doesnt hardly improve sound, you need a new head unit. The speakers are standard 5.5inch (IIRC), so you can fit anything you want. I have Alpines that are decent..but its really your choice. Apparently halfords are doing 20% off at the moment, and you can always find good deals in the back of Max Power.

I would agree with Marco. Speakers are often "ok" but the amplifier is too weak/cheap. On the M Coupé, I had standard speakers with a Sony MD + CD Charger system. Sound sucked. Replaced the speakers with good JBL ones, definitely not entry-level (like 500 USD for 4 speakers), sound still sucked. Replaced the Sony unit with a Blaupunkt San Francisco CD 72 (comes with a Key-Card safety, very convenient to use) with multi-channel equalizer. Costs same as the speakers set. Dramatically improved the sound, like night and day. If possible, get a car stereo shop to try one or two other systems in place of your current one (takes literally 3 minutes to plug/unplug from the store display into your car, so easy request to close a deal). Something that might be worth considering. There's a discussion on the Elise forum at the mo about using a small pioneer active sub. It's a tube about 20cm diameter and the length of your forearm - sits nicely on the shelf behind one of the seats. Doesn't require an amp or anything and whilst it's probably not fantastic quality compared to other subs on the market, for the size and price (£85) it's probably quite good at giving a bit of low end response in the small cabin. I reckon it could improve the sound in the VX quite a lot. Would need to run an RCA cable and live wire from the headunit - probably through the handbrake/gearstick tunnel... Also, would need to secure it down somehow. Jase

have you got any more info on that active sub? Model number so that I can look it up.. I never thought about an active sub because usually I wouldn't consider one, but it might be just the job for the VX. cheers

Go to http://www.mcs-direc...alog/index.html, click on Pioneer, then subwoofers.

TSWX105A - £83
TSWX10LPA - £117 (as far as I can see, same as the other one bit with neon light!!)

Does anyone have any experience with these things? Will it fit on the shelf (dimensions at bottom of this post -15cm being the important measurement)? I think I'm gonna buy one and rig up a quick release holder for it on the shelf.. Pioneer do make a 20cm version, but thats probably way too big (280x248x475 mm). Features TS-WX105A Sensitivity (1W/1m) 100 dB Woofer size (cm) 10 cm Damper type Double Damper with Dual Damper Ring Built-in amplifier 100 Watt Built-in variable LPF (50-125 Hz, -12dB/oct.) Yes Enclosure Volume 4 liter Input gain control / phase switch Yes RCA/speaker level inputs Yes Dimensions (W x H x D) 162x154x395 mm

Another option is Panasonics offering:
PAN-CJBL150
150w active subwoofer 16cm diaphram driver, acoustic feedback, ISO connector.

It could stand up behind the seats maybe? You get a bigger cone (16cm) and more watts (150), but it costs £150.

I prefer the Pioneer/terminator laser cannon thing, although I use that shelf for putting my softop when it's rolled up. I think some of the Elise guys have already placed orders for these so give it a week or two and we should be able to get some pics.

is it actually possible to get the soft top on the shelf? I remember trying once and failed miserably! Anyway I would make it so that the sub can be removed quickly and easily (as I have will all my cars because often I need the space). The problem for me with the pioneer one is how small the cone is -its smaller than the standard speakers, so can't give a very deep bass. Still, it will be interesting to see what the lotus guys have to say about it.

The neon version has 7 litres volume compared to 4 litres on the non neon version - not sure if this makes much difference. I think you can switch the light off. As for the roof, I slide the drivers seat forward and then you can easily get the roof onto the shelf - fits perfectly. cheers Jase

Absolutely! I couldnt, but the missus managed it! Experiment with the way you roll it up and push the seat all teh way foward. Free's up the boot for just luggage, and shoes ofcourse
