I had a look at my air filter today. I am embarrased to say this is the first time since I've had the car (5 years?)

Anyway, as you can imagine it was pretty horrible. It is an ITG foam one.

What should I do? Can I wash this one. Will a standard filter do the job just aswell? I think the Airbox is a modified Coutenay one - it seems to have an extra hole in it.

I have  a BMC CDA airbox which I did use on my last turbo mnay years back. I am wondering about trying this out again.

Yes, you can clean it and lightly re-oil it, if you can be arsed.

I have a GM paper filter in my modified airbox and its good for the other side of 400 BHP. Good filtration as well. Dave

the problem with the standard filter is only a very small part of its surface area gets used by the airbox

I use K&N RC-3690  , this is good for plenty of bhp

K &N site says that's a cotton gauze filter. Do they need to be oiled or is that's just the foam ones. If so what's the maintainence required on the K &N?

our right steve, thats is he case of the oem box setup, Dave handy work removes that

Sure when I was round ITG Andy confirmed the surface area of the oem filter test flowed 438bhp or 458bhp before restriction. Cant remember which for sure.

clearly filtration better than any aftermarket filter

Run an Apexi on my track beastie (SR20DET powered) and seem to flow well but dont care about filtration due to track use only and it sticks out the side of the bonnet LOL (no room under bonnet) it does however seem to be better than a lot of the other jap options :)

Also depends on volume of intake you lik between the modded air box vs apexi - the apexi made good power on George BC car on standalone

I am running the Apexi and I cant praise it enough. Sounds absolutely awesome - Lots of sucking  - if only home life could be this good! I also think that the engine runs smoother under boost ith  mod. Jon

Well for the moment I have put a BMC carbon dynamic Airbox on it. I found it gathering dust in my garage from my last VXT. It feels smoother but i cannot work out whether it is or whether it has lost me power. It's certainly quieter than the modified standard air box.
