Come to the conclusion that my steering rack needs changing, ball joints have been checked, track rods changed, and the uj's seem tight, so looking at refurbished racks. Anyone had a rack from carparts-direct.co.uk (http://www.carparts-...Elise&ii=173079)?

I only live 2 minutes drive from M&P Steering, but would quite probably have to take my existing rack to them, rather than do it on an exchange basis, which could be a bit of a problem as the car would be taking up a garages ramp whilst this is going on.

Is the rack the same as from all Elises, or just the S2? I have also read that there are 2 different makes, are they interchangable with one another?

I used a elise s2 from 2007 to replace mine , some small changes in the casting but its a couple of hours labour to swap, assuming rusty track rods play nicely.

On the site you gave , the parts number is different between elise and vx220 parts

if possible make the upgrade to a quicker rack, I love mine as it gives the car a much more precise feel.

(although my old rack was very much in needing of replacing, so you could argue that the refresh had a greater impact on feel, however the slightly less turns is nice and it doesnt make the car too heavy for parking)

If I end up having to get a new rack then I might go for a quick rack, but would rather keep the costs down if possible. Must admit that I'm a bit dubious about getting a recon rack from someone without a recommendation.

I um'd and argh'd over this when my rack developed some play in it. The price of some of the reconditioned racks was very tempting.

In the end i stumped up the £400 for a quick rack from Titan, definitely no regrets, I love the slightly faster rack (2.5) and it's nice knowing it's got a brand new rack in there. I did replace the rack myself with no issues which did save me some money though.

Also i sold my old rack for £80 to someone who wanted it to rebuild so that brought the cost down a bit more too.
