My money's on throttle pedal, but knowledge of which car we're talking about would help.

Ummm, first thing to do is read the error codes out of the ECU rather than guessing... that's why the little light comes on. You can buy a cheap ODB2 code reader off eBay if you don't have one already.

1271 is loom of doom.

The 2 black and blue connectors under the header tank need a check, and some contact spray.

don't use WD40 to clean electrical connectors.. Its not what its for and within 40 days you may have the same problem back. use electrical contact cleaner and clean the connections as above

its cheap from halfords

Cars are getting old.  Its interesting seeing what gets posted these days compared with a few years ago.  Suspension refreshes are getting common too.

I think garaging the cars helps with this sort of thing a good deal.

yes that may be, but I don't have the space for a garage. I'm planning on a carport build in the summer. To be fair this is the first sort of issue I have had like this. Its more likely caused by me spilling water as the engine bay get covered with mats when not in use.

I need to work out if its the pedal sensor itself as I noticed that the loom was getting caught on the brake return spring, or the blue and black connectors..

Its a job for another day
