From Piston Heads Email.

Are you frustrated with sticking to National speed limits?
Do you own a powerful sports car that can be a handful to drive at times?
Perhaps you just love driving really fast and exploring the full potential of what both you and your car are capable of?
If the answer to any of these questions is 'YES' then Silverstone Racing School has the course for you. Famous for its racing driver coaching and tuition, SRS has applied its race proven methods to the Advanced Performance Driving Course .

The course teaches owners of performance cars new skills to hone their driving technique, ultimately allowing them to push themselves and their cars to the absolute limit.

The course includes:

Circuit driving briefing - superb lecture from the senior instructor covering basic to advanced techniques.
One-to-one personal tuition from a top instructor in a Lotus Elise
Caterham Car Control Course
Five 20-minute own car lapping session with debriefs from the instructors
All this for little more than a typical trackday, great value for money! Instructors on the day are usually the likes of Rob Barff - Le Mans driver, Danny Watts - F3 race winner, Steve Warburton - FPA Champion, Tim Mullen - FIA GT racer, Barry 'Whizzo' Williams - completed over 750 races since 1959 with hundreds of wins to his name, plus many more.

A typical day begins with arrival and sign on at 8.30 a.m., drivers lunch at around 12 p.m. and the day will end with a presentation at 4.30 p.m. Cost for the day is £350 Inc VAT.
Course dates

23-Sep-04 : National Circuit

27-Oct-04 : Grand Prix Circuit

29-Nov-04 : Grand Prix Circuit

The course is suitable for anyone who holds an UK driving licence, regardless of previous track experience. You are welcome to bring any type of car as the course is not restricted to just performance cars.

At the risk of sounding controversial that sounds like a load of money for precious little time on track to me. :( Also, the fact the instructors are 'names' does not make them good instructors.

If I was looking to get into track driving I'd book a normal trackday and book an instrutor all day. Cost varies but would be about £150. So a day a Bedford and your own personal instructor ALL day would cost you approx £280 or so. Ok so you wouldn't get the Elise drive (like who cares ;) ) and the Caterham handling circuit is a glorified cark track - fun, but you'll learn 3/5ths of fcuk all.

Alistair McQueen experience at Hethel is similar cost, that is him, you and another punter, to allow you to get your breath back.

I agree with thorney thumbsup
SRS is just (not very) glorified corpoate entertainment. You'll learn next to nothing.

I did the one day race intensive thumbsdown I know less than fcuk all and still learned nothing! Bastards.

it was Alistair and we went out before any of the crashes. I just assumed he'd give a bit more actual instruction. :( (Its not like I don't need it  )

Alistair McQueen was not involved in the accidents. He was my instructer at the crimbo bash. He didn't say a word for the first 2 laps and then he was advising me what i was doing wrong and how to better myself the rest of the time we were out there. Thorney maybe your just too damn good :D Either that or I was that sh*t on my very first trackday.

I got a flyer about this a while ago. I seriously thought about it because: a) I want to drive an Elise b) I want to drive a Caterham c) Silverstone is one of two tracks I really want to drive the other being Brands. I decided that £350 was a bit steep though. I also asked about the experience of the average punter and was told that few have any track experience at all, I thought this was perhaps another reason to stay clear. chinky chinky
