Can anyone diagnose my problem?

Bad rotational knock and vibration from the rear nearside under power, silent on the overrun,  I suspected the driveshaft which lost its grease last year. I haven't changed the shaft, but there is 2-3mm of play where the shaft enter the diff, see the video.  Apologies for the length, but the movement is clear around 25 seconds and 35 seconds.

What's failed?

your diff bearings should not have that much play, time for another gearbox thumbsdown

Thanks guys, fully expected but I needed to know.  I have a new engine and had planned to change the whole lot at some point.  The immediate outcome is that the VX will be put away while other decisions are made.

This might not be the huge disaster it appears if a single bearing has failed in the diff - it may be fixable by a specaiist at resonable price if the casing and other parts are not dmaged although if its a high mileage box then a full recon may make better sense.

shame its happened tho' :(

I suspect you're right, but at 110K mostly hard miles I will change the lot.  Spent some time reading up about the F23 yesterday and there's no mention of the cost of new boxes or a reliable reconditioner.

If I'm fitting a new engine, I want a transmission in new or nearly new condition.  There's no rush, so if anyone hears of such a beast, let me know thumbsup

I had/have what seems to be a very similar problem.

posted here http://www.vx220.org...-for-me-please/

Mine is only on right hand corners though, but also from the same area and under power.

I had Matt Bentley try to sort it for me. He thought it was the CV joint had replaced it but it didn't cure it. Him and Scuffers then felt it was differential related. I have just left it, waiting for it to fail!

What is odd with mine is that after a a couple of laps driven hard on track it disappears completely but then returns later back on road. almost as though hard driving/heat gets rid of it for a while.

There was some play in the drive shafts but Matt felt it was normal play for a road car. I have done 4 track days and 3500 miles since and nothing has changed.

Courtenay have a specialist who recons gearboxes. They did mine.... hmmm maybe thats not a good recommendation?

Problem is I can't remember many people not having further problems once it's been worked on or may be people just don't post if it's gone smoothly

if it was mine, I would just swap in another F23 AF second hand £120 , plus a new Clutch slave 55558371 the only guy I trust is Steve at Vauxhall-Turbo-Spares 07877 630254 , tell him what you want and you can try the box in the running car before he strips it.

Its so simple to rule out the CV joint so not sure why he would replace it without knowing for def that it was at fault. There's not much left apart from the diff once you've ruled out the wheels/drive shafts/CVs
