Replacing discs and pads. Got to the rear pads and I can't seem to depress the back brake caliper piston enough to get my new pads in. Any advice anyone please? NOTE - I did take the cap of the brake fluid resevoir as instructed.

And another one. The insulation appears to be split on this here:-

Is this the brake cable or the brake pipe - is this dangerous? There has been no fluid leakage - I am assuming it is the brake cable from TIS.

Thanks

Are you just trying to push it? You need to turn it

Turn clockwise to wind the piston in - sometime they go easier if you push in at the same time.

A generic piston wind back tool from a motor factors / Halfords will do it.

For the VX I made a tool using a flat bit of metal, drilled holes at appropriate gap and welded a bit of bar into the holes.  That was enough to get a purchase onto the lugs/holes and turn it back in,

handbrake cable has the split, buy a Lotus one unless you want to pay triple the price at the vauxhall dealers

make sure the brake fluid cap is off , makes pressing in the piston a lot easier.

Ah - twist it - as I remeber there are holes in the piston - thanks guys.

Is the brake cable dangerous as it is - I have taped it up for now. If I change the brake cable have I got to replace the

whole length to the handbrake handle? Does that go through the sill?

Careful when twisting not to snag the rubber boot - it will tear quite easily. As I found out 😠

There is a slight tear in it already - is the boot to keep dust off?

Yes-to keep dust out so it doesn't get jammed up. Mine's had a tear in it for about a year but brakes seem fine. I've put off sorting it as apparently it's a massive pain in the arse to replace so I may as well wait till they need refurbishing

That handbrake cable needs replacing in reality. They are only about £25 and are a breezr to fit. You only need to remove the middle undertray as that cable just loops from one side to the other, pulling on the primary cable under the middle undertray.

I wrote this guide a few years back that should help you decide whether or not to do it, as well as to show how easy it is to diy.
