Hi guys, my friend has an issue with his series 2 Toyota powered s not starting after winter storage outside, here's the message he's sent me......... a fully charged battery was put on due to alarm draining it, the engine turns over and fires but only for a few seconds it won't tick over. I've checked the connections I can see, had every fuse out to see if any have blown, spayed easy start in the throttle body still no joy. Even rang my lotus guy and he says its a new one for him. Any ideas from the brains on here? I'm sure it'll be Something easy

Sounds like it could be immobiliser related?

Same, if it runs for the exact same time each time it starts, it sounds like an immobiliser problem. Would explain why easy start etc won't make a difference.

Diagnostic may confirm depending on the ECU/Software used

Sometimes accompanied with a flashing eml on certain vehicles although I have no experience of the S2/Toyota engine management so would rely on it.

As above, if I use my spare key to start my vx it does exactly this. So I would say as above and have the immobiliser checked out.

Or try the spare key.

Would it still turn over if it was immobiliser related?

It will usually do exactly as you have described, either briefly start and then cut out or in some cases endlessly give a healthy turn over.

Vx Immobiliser issues or faulty key Symptoms engine turns fires and runs for a few seconds then cuts out usually giving an engine light Has he tried a spare key ? Possibly reprogram the key to the car

Sounds immobiliser related. The car will always turn over if there is power in the battery. If it fires up and then cuts out it sounds very immobiliser related.

Vx owners know more about cars anyway. Lotus owners are bellends.

Try pressing and holding both buttons on the immobiliser fob  for 10-15 seconds. When they are drained they can loose comms with the ecu and need relearning.

I can't comment on the lotus. But normally immobiliser fobs are totally inductive. What that means is its completely unrelated the to battery. There is a ring on the car that sends out a signal to the key / fob and there is a coil / tag in the immobiliser that is energised by the signal and sends a signal back to the car which disables the immobiliser.

The Elise is different to the VX. Instead of a proximity based/chip setup you just have a fob that sends a rolling code to the ECU a bit like a garage door or whatever.

You can bypass the immobiliser quite easily but you'll have to PM me if you need that info.
