Getting hold of the correct type of mesh seems to be the problem. I can get them made ok if the mesh can be found.

  Huh? What mesh?

I stand corrected grill

It would be made from scratch, not from cutting a mesh/grill, it's a much more complex shape than it looks, Sam would have spent a LOT of time creating a 3d cad of it to make his Splam grills originally. I'd buy the one for sale today to send to a company to copy it if viable.

It really doesn't need to be a 3D CAD. Buy an original, take it apart, lay it out in the most compact area, put dimensions into a 2D CAD program. Get quotes.

Tom it's as if you've read my mind. Except I don't have a splam or steinmetz to hand so have made card board templates and offered them up to the vx, transferred to abs (I think) plastic - in the process of cutting them out and will look at finishing it off in May some point if I can pull my finger out.

Would I be stepping on anyones toes if I was able to offer an alternative?

Ok, well as long as I don't upset anyone this is where I am at; Just bought a steinmetz to use as a template. I have a friend who owns a plastics company (also a vx owner), he will be able to do it no problem. I was intending to do it for myself, but just stumbled into the group buy room and found this thread...

I'm not sure how your mate plans to make the grille, put the steinmetz ones must be pressed together in one go...so all might not be lost

Certainly not, I was going to look at building one myself but it would be very time consuming to produce multiples. Keep us updated!

Steinmetz arrived today, going to the plastics company tomorrow. Should have an idea of whether its viable, a time frame and cost by next week. Fixings is the only thing I am unsure of so far.

The steinmetz requires clam off fitting whereas the splam can be fitted clam on. I think this would be preferable to most. I have no experience with the splam fixings is what I am saying.

I looked at the fixings for both.

Here the Splam can be seen to have 8 points which are intended to be through the grille to the rear.

Here, the Steinmetz can be seen to also have 8 points which are similarly placed but not the same.

http://www.vx220.org...teinmetz-grill/

It depends on how securely you want to fix.  Looking at the Steinmetz, the closed tab fixing lends itself well to thin black cable ties through the grille and perhaps a dab of Tigerseal on the rear of each also, so fixing without the clam off is do-able if you're not worried about absolute security.

The Splam grill is not so easy, probably do-able in a similar fashion with a bit of messing about because there are no closed tabs, just a reduced apperture.

So if the copy uses the Steinmetz type fixing tabs, fixing with the clam on is an option and the one I would go for personally.

The splam grille was fixed with rubber rawl nuts and could be fitted and removed with the clam on.

I'm interested in a grill if any are manufactured. Maybe it could be fixed with one central bolt through the towing eye thread, then you could cover this with a Vauxhall/ Opal Badge.... I'm just going on what I can see on mine the larger holes could be covered in fabric mesh. Like tight material to stop particle ingress damaging the radiator perhaps?
