Is it legal to be shot with a speed gun from an unmarked car parked on the hard shoulder?  Seems strange given the fixed cameras are clearly marked and the camera vans have stickers all over them; why should the plod not comply with this?  As I carried on my journey I noticed someone texting at 90mph and another car massively overloaded and wondered what the traffic police think their job is.  Ah well, perhaps he was just taking a photo of my lovely car and I shouldn't have called him a fecking wonker after all.

Their job is to rake in as much cash as they can. Thats why they place the cameras at notorious black spots, outside schools and shops, approaches to bad bends and so on, hang on they don't they put them on nice safe open roads  gets much more cash in. Good luck, hope you didn't get done.

As long as they are in full view, ie not crouched hiding round the back of the car etc then I believe it is legal.  I'm not sure if they have to be in high-vis though.

They park where they like.  I've seen a police motorcyclist inside a bus shelter doing checks with people waiting for the bus in a line behind him.

Yes unfortunately they can park up wherever they like and get the camera out. I saw a crafty one the other day in an unmarked fiesta van and had his camera mounted on the window/mirror plinth.

The police in Fleet hide behind there cars and I have seen them zapping motorists though the gap between roof and light bar. Very sneaky,

If you are speeding, you speeding no excuses. Sorry but not what you probably want to hear. We have all done it including myself. I have never been caught in this country and would be annoyed with myself for being caught. I could not complain if I was caught though as I know the law.

Yes it is annoying when you see others committing offences and getting away with it but we all know the law,

I believe in Englandshire they can get you how they like, by hook or by crook. It has to be a little more clear cut up here but they are still sneaky bastards

Very true and once over the limit your at risk of getting done we all know that but they still use the law more for profit than safety in a lot of cases and set cameras at positions picked for the most hits normally nice wide open roads that can be very safe slightly over the limit and not at black spots and dangerous places that should be driven slowly at or below the limits, Bastards

I am tempted to agree with ghand.  I know the law and am not questioning that but I am questioning the police's priorities and consistency.

Claws - spent many very happy years in Scotland but remember vividly the day they started sticking Gatsos on the A1 in East Lothian and in to the Borders!  They weren't bright yellow in those days either.

I will continue to drive at a speed appropriate to the road,. conditions, volume of traffic etc whilst being mindful of the law.  I hope the police will get off the hard shoulder and play their part.

Funny I always thought stopping on the hard shoulder for any reason other than a break down or emergency situation was illegal. Obviously the police are exempt from the highway code when it comes to making money even though they are creating just as much of a risk if not more by their being there as anyone else.

Hopefully one day they will cause an accident (that affects no one but themselves) so they think twice before parking in such a fcuking stupid place again. If I was facing a prosecution from that position I would fight it in court under principle regardless of what local guide lines may be in place on how they conduct their 'business'.

The police like to tell cyclist to use the cycle paths(not alone they must cost thousands to convert into cycle paths)yet last summer there was a camera van parked across the cycle path catching cars speeding,I really wanted to get my bike out and bang on the van asking him to please move out of my way as he is obstructing a cycle path.why should cyclist have to go on the road to get around this van?and I know what would happen if a car parks in the same place!

Time to install the Stinger DSI with lasershield, or the new one they have, the VIP. Expensive, but will give ROI.
