My windscreen is quite badly chipped and apparently it *should* therefore have failed the MOT (it didn't). So I'm thinking about having my windscreen replaced for the sake of paying £75 excess as I've never liked the repair jobs they do where they inject that resin into the screen. From a search on here it looks like (i) the £1,000 windscreen cover I get on my policy won't be enough and (ii) conventional wisdom is to replace with the Exige screen. Is that a fair summary? Any other helpful views or advice? Thanks in advance.

I think the old try searching advise probably applies on this one...

But from what I recall, it should come to less than £1000. Some people also consider getting a heated windscreen, but then you need to figure out transfering/replacing the windscreen surround. Also, if you have a hardtop, my understanding is to have that installed to ensure you get the best fit.

I got mine replaced in January with autoglass through my Insurance for £75 excess for a black surround screen. Autoglass would have cost £950. I got a price from a local screen company and would have cost me £500 but my Insurance company would not pay them for the replacement. When I booked the screen job with autoglass, what a performance, I explained I wanted a black surround screen which was £50 cheaper then a silver one. They brought a Lotus S1 screen which was incorrect, then they brought a silver screen a few days later then they brought the black screen. My mate had the same performance with his Lotus S2 a few weeks befor mine was fitted with rip off autoglass.

Had mine replaced by Autoglass two weeks ago, painless apart from the £75 excess. They came out to my designated garage who eased the clam for them. Would have no hesitation in using them again (tho hopefully not for a while yet)

So can a windscreen company reliably remove the windscreen surround and transfer it or is it one of those hope it works out kind of affairs ?

Mine needs replacing and as it happened while the car was in for repairs I rather get it done myself than scam the insurance...

screen can be replaced. I got a heated one cheaper, and then paid for fitting. With the total bill my insurance company were happy that i did this, but, obviously, they didn't pay for the heated screen wiring. So free upgrade for me, money saved (sorta) for the insurance company. Ricky evans motorsport is the place to look for but check your insurer first!

So Auto Windscreens are coming out tomorrow (that's who my insurer uses). Apparently and predictably if it is repairable he will have to repair it instead of deciding to replace it. I quite fancy what I have seen described as the Exige screen (ie has a black surround) so will work my patter on him to see if I can convince him it needs replacing...!

Tell them you can not see through the screen when the sun is shining due to the millions of small stone ships as its like a glaze (restricted view) they usually break the screen when removing it so the window screen company wont be bothered as long as they get paid.

This worked a charm, cheers :) Now need to find a link or similar to the screen I want so they can track it down for me!

Worth getting them to come and look at it on the insurance in my very limited experience!

The guy was very willing to enter into a discussion about the need for a replacement rather than repair because of the number of chips on it...and mine weren't that big!

Just had a quick thought, do new screens come with a new front roof seal, or are you expected to re-use the old one? As mine is booked tomorrow morning?
