Hello there -

Quick question...  I'm looking for a stereo with built in Sat Nav.  One of those where the screen comes out.

Must have Bluetooth, iPhone connection and of course Sat Nav.

Any recommendations?  The car has the original still in it and is well past its best...

If you mean the sort with about a 7'' motorised flip out screen then with most of them you'll struggle with clearance on the dash overhang when it retracts. I used to have one but I had to cut the dash to suit. However I was never really happy with this approach so have since moved on to a Ford specific double DIN jobby along with a custom dash surround built from scratch.

In my experience the various unbranded ones from China eBay are actually very good. I would recommend an android based one where you can load TomTom maps onto it via the app or SD card data.

In a VX? Sorry to sound negative but my honest advice is a cheap one lol. Sound quality isn't really a concern in these cars so whatever's on offer? Also if your leaning over for the controls a touch screen may be a pain - I'm sure others on here have experience of lots if units. Maybe a remote controllable unit would be easier. I have an double din alpine nav in my golf and they do a flip screen version. Software is excellent, fast and responsive, but things like time correction and EQ in a VX is a bit of a waste lol.

I once read here there was a specific type that had extra strech to make the vx dash. (ie no need to cut it)

Can´t remember if it was a kenwood or a pioneer though

I've bought some crappy thing from Halfords until we can get Carplay in an aftermarket head unit.

Yeah I read that somewhere too.  It was a reply to the chap that cut his dash.

Now I play the waiting game.  Come forth and shed your light...!  I only want one of these as my Sat Nav is useless and am looking to combine the 2.

Yeah thought of that.  It'll be second option.

I've got a 10 year old daughter too so a screen with DVD will help to entertain her.  Don't want lots of tech in the car.  Just 1 unit that does everything.

I went for a halfords cheap one that had a SD slot... find more so I don't even bother putting it on.

This looks like it should be ideal for in the VX. You would need this add on box to enable the GPS though (easily hidden under dash) and you may have to be carefull of passengers knees catching it if you don't remove the face plate.

I'm actually going to go down a different route and mount a nexus 7 in my car. That does GPS and audio and anything else I want it to.

Have you found a way to control the volume of the android TomTom voice independently  of music?. it seems to be a huge flaw that the volume of the driving instructions cant be independently controlled . otherwise this would be my preferred solution.

I have exactly the same plan. I might hit you up regarding how you are doing it so we can discuss. I have a second dash already to go with a frame for the tablet. Thinking I might move the start button to make it do'able though. Not a fan of having the satnav off centre.

The VX even with the comfort pack is loud.  Having a conversation in it at speed is difficult/impossible.

When I first got my car I got a Blaupunkt SatNav and it was OK but I found that I was listening to the music louder and louder and then decided that the radio competing with the VX was making me go deaf!

I have an iPhone 5 with TomTom applicaion on it.  I have double sided sucker whihc I put in front of the speedo and plug my ear buds and power cable in.  Works great.  Yes it is wired in (in needs power as it uses a lot of power with the SatNav) but if it is just you in the car its not a big hassle, just remeber to unplug when you get to the PFS!

Obvioulsy not so good if you have a passenger but most of my driving ((I've done over 160k in the VX) is by myself going to and from work.  Leave the radio for when you have a passenger.  The great thing with the TomTom App as it gets updated all the time.

My Blaupunkt Sat/Nav needed the CD with the maps on it replacing every few years at a cost of around £125!  I got the TomTom App for my wifes iPod Touch years ago for about £30 and its been updated loads since.  A rare bargain indeed.

You're right - I had a trip down to Halfords to look at their range and there isn't anything that is better than the stock option (that isn't 500 notes).  That quick visit changed my mind and now I'm off to get a simple Tom Tom.. The Radio / CD that's in it will do just fine.

The money is better spent on something else...

Alpine is expected to release the first carplay compatible aftermarket head unit later this year. I'm holding out for that.

Not without quite extensive dash modification. I've done it though so it is possible.
