I've been having issues recently with my engine going into "limp home mode" at high revs in 5th gear. I have an appointment with Regal tomorrow for a full health check, I managed to borrow my Dads diagnostic scanner today and It came up with a really odd code, P1490.

A quick Google search revealed this:

P1490 - Auxiliary Cooling Pump Relay Open Circuit

􏰀 Final stage diagnosis in control unit (Circuit interruption)

Concerned Terminals:

45 (X31)

P1490 - Auxiliary Cooling Pump Relay Short To Battery

􏰀 Final stage diagnosis in control unit (Short circuit to voltage)

Concerned Terminals:

45 (X31)

Refer to test step :C-32

Refer to test step :C-32

P1490 - Auxiliary Cooling Pump Relay Short To Ground

􏰀 Final stage diagnosis in control unit (Short circuit to ground)

Can anyone make any sense of it and explain? I'm not sure what it means by Aux cooling pump?

hmm thanks very much. So it could be as simple as a blown fuse or a new pump. I'll check it out tomorrow, the health check is £95 so i might not bother! Do you think i'll get one of these pumps from Autovaux if it ha failed?

Thanks, i've just been out and had a look at the fuses, one of the 7.5A fuses had blown in the boot. I swapped it with the other 7.5A fuse but couldn't hear the pump running. (probably because it only runs when really hot?) I'll take it for a drive tomorrow and see how i get on.

They have one in stock, £102. Cheers for the link.  thumbsup

The Aux water pump only switches on when:

1. The engine is switched off.

2. Coolant temps are very high (dunno how high though).

ok, seems a little odd then that it makes the ECU go into limp home mode if it only comes on whilst the engine is turned off?? I replaced the fuse today and took it for a drive, it cleared the fault code and it didn't go into safe mode so seems to have solved it.

You could assume that if it deems the pump at fault then it wont want to let the engine get too hot thus relying on the pump more...

Also, to quote someone from another vauxhall forum from many years ago.."I'd sooner shove a fistfull of angry wasps up my arse than take my car to Reg and Al"

Ok, so it seems that wasn't the cause of my safe mode problem. The fuse sorted the pump but I have 2 more error codes: P0100 mass or volume air flow circuit low input, just changed the MAF meter so it's not that. Any ideas? (0235 unknown) I believe this is turbo boost sensor? If so is this the sensor that sits on top if the inter cooler / charge cooler? I have another vx I can borrow parts from so wanted to make sure I had the right sensor. TIA

p0235 is the TMAP sensor on the top of the intercooler , drivers side rear wheel arch liner peel back to get access. Although it sounds more like a wiring problem , iirc the MAF and TMAP have a common earth in the loom.

oh right, thanks for the info. sounds like thats a real possibility then because the MAF is fine. i'll change the TMAP anyway and then go from there.
