Popped to see the olds pick something up. Car starts and drives perfectly. 20 mins later I come out to go home and when I go to start it, put the key in, turn to full, dash lights up as usual but car doesn't start then dash goes blank. No lights nothing. Now when I put the key in and turn there is absolutely nothing going on, dash doesn't light up or anything. Checked the battery and noticed the positive terminal was VERY close to the chassis. Have moved it away but it's still completely dead. Is it possible the battery has fried or has blown a fuse somewhere? I have been using it all weekend without any problems so the battery should be plenty charged. What's next to check?

Spray both positive and negative terminals with wd40 and also the other end of the negative lead. Possibly a bad connection somewhere. Then check fuses.

It certainly sounds like it could be a bad connection.. Where does the other end of the negative terminal connect?

Does it light up the cluster etc every time you try, but then won't crank? Either it's shorted to the tub (but your see scorch marks ) or you have been very unlucky and have a dead cell... It happens.

Nope the dash doesn't light up at all, no lights no nothing. Will try jump start it to see if that helps. If it has shorted to the tub what does that mean, blown fuses or something?

Yeah terminals are all tight. The positive is a little rusty looking though so might give that a clean and a good dose of WD and see if that helps. Will also try a jump and see if that will at least give dash lights and if so then looks like a battery replacement will be on order. Not checked the lights or hazards. Will have to look in the morning now though as getting dark.

Just if the hazards or sidelights work then it must be ignition power related If the lights or hazards are dead then its battery area I guess

Ok thanks, I will take a look and report back. I have a feeling it will be something battery as the dash doesn't light up at all so I wouldn't know if the hazards were on.

But the dash only lights up with the ignition on but the hazards will work with no ignition also the interior light. If these work look for ignition switch or relay issues if they don't work go for the battery first

Problem solved!

Seems a slightly rusty positive terminal was at fault. Cleaned it up and dosed it in WD40 and she fired right up. Though i did find out that the alarm seems to have a battery of its own, which only gets louder when you attach the battery, which isn't so fun when your head is right next to the siren!

Glad you are sorted I have a piece of rubber floor mat stuck to the tub between the battery and any bare metal to insulate the terminals from shorting just in case the battery moves again Just cut decent sized strips and secured with blobs of silicone sealant 😃

No probs mate good is was only a basic cheap fix My rubber stuff is just a very cheap car Matt about 400 x300 cut into strips about 10 wide As I discovered like you that the do called battery clamp / washer bottle bracket is a good bracket but a crap battery clamp Maybe the newer generation of batteries are smaller ? But I wouldn't have fancied working a bigger battery in or out the car 😩
