Hey folks! I'm on holiday in Sorrento, Italy for a week in mid October and haven't driven anything faster than a 1997 Honda Accord (2.0 ltr 4 speed auto) since February so I'm considering hiring a Ferrari/Lambo/Porsche etc for a day to play around on the Amalfi coast. Anyone got experience of doing this in Italy or Europe in general? Are the costs upfront or do they surprise you with extras when you take the car back etc?

Just a quick google found this site: http://europeluxuryc.../ferrari-rental . La Ferrari for only 13k EUR a day

Just hire a Boxster or something from one of the big brands like Avis. Expect to pay lots, a huge excess even after taking their insurance (and having at least one credit card with enough credit on it for the excess reservation they'll book on it) and probably some kind of smallish mileage allowance. But better a company like that than some cowboy place that want to charge you 3 per km over a small mileage limit and 500 per stone chip. Alternatively, just hire a Fiat 500 and murder it.

Hi, me and other half went to sorrento last year and hired a 1969 fiat 500 and a red Alfa spider to do the Amalfi coast from sorrento. (Also hired a smart car) loved all 3 cars. Try spiderlifestyle.com he has got some nice classics and he delivered them to me at our hotel.

Cheers  thumbsup . I quite like the Fiat 500 anyway so that might be nearly as much fun and less terrifyingly expensive

I did stumble on that website actually, but none of those cars interest me even slightly I'm afraid :( . Just not into old cars, I want something that accelerates quickly and ideally handles well. Or, something relatively nippy like the Fiat 500 or Boxter that can be thrown around a little bit at least

Roads around the Amalfi coast are pretty narrow in places, not sure I would risk a supercar

I did think about a quick car but only just managed about 50mph max round the coastal road with the locals overtaking on bends and scooters overtaking the car that is overtaking you! Great road though we will be going back.

I'm going to be over on the other coast at the same time Si. Heading to Puglia for a week from 7 October staying near Cisternino. Looking at car hire as well although will probably settle for a 500.

:yeahthat: One of the scariest places I have ever driven. All the locals drive like complete cnuts, not least the bus drivers. :o

My family on my mothers side are from there so I've been plenty of times.  I'd agree with all the above - don't bother with a nice car.  The roads are too narrow, the drivers are mad and all their cars have dents (for good reason).  Stick to scooters like most of the Italians do :D

Driving on the Amalfi coast is an insane experience as others here have testified.  As said, the fact that half the cars you see have a ding on them somewhere or other is testament to the way they drive; like lunatics.  Fiat 500 or similar is the way to go.  You'd be mad to chance anything with a heftier insurance premium than that.

The problem with driving is that you have to be so 100% concentrating on the road you just don't get to see what there is to see.  I did it on the bus a couple of times and it was far better than driving.  Also a day trip along the coast on a boat to Positano etc is great and well worth doing.

There's always the circumvesuviana if you want to let the "train take the strain". Not sure that goes much beyond Sorrento though.

Nonetheless a good experience.

Don't forget that with Italian law, if you have an 'accident' where you need to claim on the insurance, even just you and no other cars involved, then you need to call the carbonara folks otherwise the insurance claim is invalid.... Found that out with hertz, doodahs.
