My partner has just been promoted and will have to do a bit more travelling. She has the option of a car which she's going to take (works out better than the cash allowance over the term). Her options are the above 2 cars (or she can have an insignia lol). Never been in either or had any experience of them. Anyone got one or driven both and can give a drivers review? Anything to be wary off medium term as she'll have to keep it for up to 4 years. Cheers

I recently sold an Audi A1 with the 1.6 diesel engine, I'm presuming the A3 1.6 will be the same lump, if that's the case then I wouldn't recommend it.

Loads of lag, compared to many other modern diesels I've driven I felt this one was pretty poor.

The Mpg was awful too, no where near the manufactures figures, and worse mpg than the older car we replaced.

Given the choice between an Audi and a BMW, I'd always go for the BMW. I prefer the way they drive, I prefer their engines and I prefer their build.

Saying that I've never been in either of these cars, and with these both being the cheapest in the range, I'm not sure whether my normal rules would apply.

I'd say the BMW too bud.  The economy on their diesels is beyond comprehension!  My mates 335d which was right at the start of the ED program used to regularly hit 50+ mpg, not to mention the thing had about 300hp and 450ftlb of torque!  Bloody rapid
