Hey everyone,

A few people were asking about how this last weekend went so thought I would put a post up.

One of my customers (BillSC on here) came to me after the national and said he wanted to go racing. He didn't know what racing he wanted to do but did want to try it. I suggested before we turn his nice Harrop VX road car into a noisy horrible race car he try something else cheaper first.

We decided I would turn an MG ZR I had in the yard into a race car and have a go in that.

This weekend was his first race. It was the BMH 4-hour relay race at Snetterton (200 circuit). The plan was to have 3 cars and 4 drivers who would all do 2x 30min stints. We had Bill, me and two other friends of mine..

The race has a traditional classification at the end but also runs a handicap system for the first three hours of the race as there is such a range of cars entering. Basically they take your qualifying time as your race pace lap, the fastest qualifying time overall is set as scratch and everyone slower than that time has laps added to their total lap count at the end to even it out. This handicap can be modified throughout the first 3 hours of the race in case cars go significantly faster in the race. The plan was for the two fastest drivers to sandbag quali and their first stint and go all out in the last hour.

I was out first in quali and sandbagged by a couple of seconds and set a 1.28.6. The car was running rough and wouldn't idle, when back in the garage we found the TPS sensor had died (common Rover K-Series fault), new one fitted and all was fine. But it meant Bill who was out next only had 9 mins of his Quali session left. He went out and did 4 laps so was fine for the race.

The race started with one of the other drivers and off the start his car had issues. Limp mode and wouldn't rev past 5500rpm. He finished his stint 3rd in class and 22nd overall. Bill was up next, he completed his first 1/2 hour stint and did everything I could of asked for. He did consistent 1.30/1.31 laps when not in traffic for his whole stint. He kept it on the black stuff and had no drama's. He was overtaking as took us to 1st in in class and 18th overall.

3rd stint was completed by another driver and I was out. I had asked the team to tell me if they needed me to change my pace. I was lapping in the 1.29's and they told me to go faster. Sadly it turns out I couldn't judge my pace that well and on my next lap did a 1.27 dead. They modified our handicap and we suffered slightly.

I came in 4mins early from my stint as I thought I saw steam from under the bonnet (its always a worry with a rover k-series). I did some ducting on the radiator and sent bill out for his next stint. The cooling system ran considerably cooler now and Bill thought it was an issue so came in after 3 laps. We sent another driver out in his place and even though we quickly realised the car was fine it was too late and Bill's stint was over.

With and hour to go the other cars gearbox failed on circuit (bits that are supposed to go round and round didn't want to go round and round and they tried to come out of their casing). I was relaxing trying to act cool and was thrown into the car and told I had to drive till the end of the race. So the last stint for the race and for me was and hour long. A very hot but great hour, loads of overtaking and loads of fun.

We finished 1st in class, 14th overall and I got fastest lap in class. I couldn't have planned for more. The car was on the pace and did a long stint and the end without fault. For his first race Bill did everything I asked and more. We both had a great time and looking forward to the next race, hopefully we get one more before the end of the year.

Couple of clips for you, sadly one of the team nudged the camera for Bill's stints when strapping him in the car so have no footage of him.

I caught an S1 Elan about 30mins into the last stint and we battled till the end. I would overtake him 2 times a lap in the corners and he would just drive past me down the straights. This clip shows a late 'O why not' overtake through the middle of two cars round coram followed by the Elan overtaking again, then me getting it back about the 6th time. My hands show me trying to work out what I have to do to make it stick (not annoyed):

This clip is later in the race where I go for the inside round coram and hit something slippy. Lets say I was quite worried at the time that I was about to smash up a mint S1 Elan:

End of the race he came up to me and turns out had one of the best races he'd had for a while.

Great weekend, cant wait for more!

Matt

Thank you sir.

I also add that the ZR race car we raced can be hired for trackdays/race weekends etc. Eligible for CSCC tintops, MSV Trackday and Team Trophy, the MGCC ZR Championship etc.

We can also offer full driver tuition if required.

Matt

Just a quick thanks from me to Matt "balls to the wall" Bentley whose only fault was driving 3 to 4 seconds a lap faster than me for an entire hour non stop and making me look like the amateur that I am... Albeit an awesome amateur, thanks Rob...! 😉 Also, Matt never explained (think he's being polite to his customer here) that because I ummm'd and arrr'd and a few issues with suppliers we only had one testing session in the car. I promptly panicked and wasted most of this trying to learn how to get a front wheel drive car round Corum (and a few other corners) to the point, I am ashamed to admit, I received a driving standards warning.... Because it was a formal test day, Matt was not allowed out in the car with me and he doesn't know that at this point I was seriously considering not racing as I was so worried I was going to either destroy our or someone else's car or heaven forbid, actually hurt someone. My incompetence also meant he only had about 30 minutes in total to dial in the setup.... Gulp.... Not only did he nail the setup, the car is forgiving as hell and still incredibly quick.... But he sat me down, calmed me down, explained what I needed to change and gave me the confidence to do it. I trusted Matt to know what the car and what I was capable of (we had driven together in other cars) and followed Matts instructions to the letter. Thanks to his tuition I not only completed my stint without ever feeling like I was going off, more importantly to me, it was completed without being a danger to anyone. Helping the team move up the rankings was a bonus I would not have dreamed possible...! On top of all this.... I F*****G LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT...!!!! 😃 I really was seconds away from refusing to race but thanks to Matts tuition and ability to build an absolutely epic car with no notice or development time at all (sorry Matt, my bad) I had the time of my life and will definitely be doing more...! If you are ever lucky enough to be able to go racing with MBR, do it, I promise you, you will love it..! Mr Bentley... Thank you....!!! 👍 (Also thank you to our team mates and pit crew, they don't come on here so I won't gush, but they were also awesome and helped make it an epic day)

Always wanted to do some racing but having never been on a track driving before i think going into racing would be somewhat scary!

I might have to get myself to a track day when Matt is going to get him to give me some tips. I do plan to get some driver training before i try and go round corners faster than 5... So if anyone gets stuck behind an orange vx going really slow round corners next year. My bad

Good news that your enjoying it and doing well!! watched some of those videos looks like loads of fun!! Love how easily that elan overtakes on the straights

Why not book the ZR in the video for a day at circuit with a couple of friends or fellow vx-ers. I could sort out a group price with instruction. That way you won't be worried about the VX, won't be worried about the driving (with some instruction from the passenger seat) and hopefully a good day out!

You may love the Elan's power but it was testing me! Over took him twice a lap pretty much for 35mins and every single time he just drove straight back past!

That Elan was in a different class to us though…! Had an MGBGT V8 drive past me like I wasn't moving on the Bentley straight but then stayed with him under the bridge, through Bomb Hole and round Coram (and I can't drive worth a toffee) only to watch him disappear into the distance on the main straight. Same thing with the M3's.

Mopey - Being a complete beginner to both track driving and racing myself this year, I would strongly recommend the above. I did a few track days with Matt before going and getting my race licence. With a little preparation the test is not actually as onerous as you think it is going to be, but I am sure I would not have passed without Matts tuition and having experienced both for the first time within a short period of each other, track day driving and racing are not the same thing…. Well, both are great fun, they do have that in common I suppose

Also, if you think you would want to do your ARDS in the future then look at where you want to do it and see what car they do the test in. I think the MSV family of tracks are in RCZ's or 208's, so front wheel drive, Croft is the Mini Cooper, so front wheel drive etc…. I wish I had looked at this and practised in an appropriate vehicle beforehand. Would have been a lot less stressful than learning how to drive an FF car in 30 minutes

I might have to do that. Out of interest how much would we be looking at with your tuition Matt? I know a few people that haven't been on track and want to but want to get some tuition before going on track? I can imagine it was annoying, quite funny though  I can only imagine what he was like in the elan. Cheers Al

Al, If you got 4 people together I could sort a day, with car hire, trackday fees, fuel and tyres all included with tuition for about £275 a person. To put that into perspective normally track car hire is between £725 and £995 depending on car (commonly limited fuel), trackday £150-250, £300-400 instructor for the day.

Sounds good I could wait till then. I've got another fellow vxer that I reckon would want to do this as well. So would be good to get a 4th vxer in on it?

Anyone want to go this year…? Whether I do another race this year or not, I will definitely be wanting to go out again for some practice.

Even if there was only 2 of us it's still a good deal, especially as we would get a lot more driving each than with 4 people.
