Shoot me down if this has been discussed but I was reminiscing about my old Mk3 MR2 turbo and remembered that it was quite a common mod in the MR2 scene to add fans to the engine lid in order to pull hot air out of the engine bay.

i.e.

http://www.roguesyst...uct.aspx?ID=312

Now with the rad up front, I know there's general agreement that the twin fan pro-alloy setup restricts airflow through the rad on track so the same argument could be made for the engine bay but I'd imagine the overall airflow through the engine bay must be relatively low in comparison so a big SPAL fan would increase the airflow even on track??

Why Bother?  Well I'd like to add some more cooling to my SC to help it on those mid-summer track days and am toying with a few ideas. This is one of them (I may employ a few of the options but hopefully one at a time)...

Would love to see this tested.

Maybe with a simpler (read cheaper) kitt that does not block all the mesh of the lid.

On a track car, with external temp sensor in engine bay for proof, and see what she does.

(Last summer it got so hot in my engine bay that the connector from my tmap sensor plastic made it disconnect; so pretty hot.

Would be nice to see what's going on in there.)

Ive also had this idea with a spare rad fan bolted to my sprint engine cover.

Are intake temps a real problem on track on a 300hp+ Vx?

Does that apply with a turbo as well?

yes

But your ecu will respond to that, and tone down the ingotion a bit for safety sake.

So it will just loose a few ponies to protect the engine.

One of the belgians got creative on his lid by extending the locking mechanism:

He reported 10 to 20 degrees less oil temp on track (stage 4 tubby) after this mod.

Might look into a water injection kit if this is the case......

IMHO fans are only going to be of use in traffic and lowish speeds and a hindrance above 40mph. There was a post ages ago with a Exige and 2 massive fans strapped to the intercooler. Chris Randle gave some stats but basically no electric fan big enough to still fit in a car is going to give as much volume as moving along at 40/50 mph

I have used a blowing fan on a VX220 closed-Exige-but-open at the back style engine bay and the results were amazing. Bay temp drop from 100+ Celsius to 30-ish. Oil and intake air much lower. Will you put a thermostat in the loop?

I use a raised boot lid the same as Mbes2 and Foc on his race car , These do help to draw hot air out of the engine bay.

The fan on an MR2 are primarily to help in low airflow situation like sitting in traffic after the engine has built up a lot of heat etc. The trade off is between having a fan to remove hot air at lower speeds vs. potentially interrupting the natural flow path at higher speeds (obstructing the mesh vent).. You'd need a very slim fan to fit an unmodified engine cover also - the MR2 has a reasonable amount of space there.. A temp sensor is used (black thing just below the fan in the pic of the white car) to activate the standard side intake and engine lid fans. Grabs one of those maybe?

interesting idea, I'd like to see if this could work as I get high temps.
