Hi all....I now that there are numerous threads on here on this subject but to be honest most of them are quite old now.

I have a VXT and want a cigarette lighter connected trickle charger to keep the battery active over winter. I can see that CTEK appears to be the preferred, but I have no idea on the right model number or spec. I don't want to spend a fortune so one reasonably priced would be preferred.

Can anyone provide me with make/models of suitable chargers, CTEK or others please?

Thanks in advance

Mike

Hi, you need the CTEK MXS 5.0 model. Had mine as a xmas pressie. Money well spent, just plug it into the 12v socket under the dash and forget about it. The CTEK was about £40.00p

Was is not covered by a blanket or similar. It does say on it don't cover.

I have three cteks, one 5.0 on the vx, another 5.0 on the landy and a third 3.6 I think on the mower.  The 3.6 used to be on the vx and it worked well, which was second hand from another forum member.

They get the   thumbsup from me.

Thanks for the feedback. I have just found this for £39.99 at Argos on-line, good compared to £56.00 on Ebay.

Does the unit include the standard cigarette charger? As my car isn't close by can you confirm that the cigarette charger is standard on the VXT?

Many thanks

Mike

Hi Truly Skint, my new 5.0 cteks didn't have the cigarette 12v charging  option in the pack. They only had the crocodile clips and the  hard wiring spade fittings.

Mine was also not included but they are easy to get from web site or even eBay 😀

I'm using an Oxford Optimiser motorbike charger that I used to use on my MX5, and it seems to work fine in the VX220 plugged in to the fag lighter socket

I have the Ctek 5.0 and have used the terminal connections on quick release that came in the pack from Amazon.

I put it on over the weekend every now and then but after some scary stories, I do not have the confidence to leave it running continually.....especially since I have cancelled the insurance on it whilst it is SORN'ed.... :(

Good luck,

Jon

Leave mine plugged in and turned on all year round and have done for 2yrs. Unit doesn't even get warm. Like the earlier post stated....as long as you don't cover the unit or place in a really confined space , you will have no problems. My unit is in the front passenger footwell plugged into an extension cable along with the extension cable's lead going through the open passenger window (wound down about 1" ).  Have faith in the unit's ability and let it charge in the right conditions.

It was mine that set on fire, and it was nothing to do with it being covered or in a confined space. The unit itself actually failed and ignited, and would have done so whether covered or sat in the middle of a football field.

If you're going to use one, make sure you extend the wires (from unit to battery) to get the unit into a place where it won't do any damage if it sets on fire.

CTEK unit can be screwed directly to the wall, I believe, as there are suitable holes, or they do make a bracket/cradle type affair, which is about £15.

Cheers

Got a sutars waterproof 12V socket on mine mounted on underneath of clam behind front splitter. Can just plug into that while cars under the car port and plug into the outside waterproof power socket. No minded to worry about charger being in the car.
