Am looking to find some kit which will allow me to hinge the rear (most important) and front clams. Found these custom made 'hood' hinges @ http://shop.streetdreamsbyross.com/

Anybody any comments.... or ideas (about hinges :borg: ) Anybody manufacturing this type of kit this side of the pond?

Might be some clues on the BOE website as to what they've done with the Elise. There's also a couple of time lapse install videos on Youtube that might help. ETA: http://www.boefabric...oduct/clamhinge

The problem is the VX clam fits right under the rear.  It needs to quite far back to clear.

Suppose options are to take some off the bottom of the rear clam and hide the modifications with a diffuser or... split the top/bottom portions of the rear clam and only hinge the top part, or use gas struts to lift the top portion clear.

Messed around with this on my old Elise clam years ago, even made a mock up out of wood that's not a million miles from the OP. The BOE kit has possibilities though once you've got a hinge in place you'll realise how many other things have to be re-thought to let it open easily. thumbsup Interesting work Buchos. Great idea to fabricate test hinges with wood. Thanks for the pointers.

If its for racing and youre not all hung up on aesthetics its easy, but quite a bit of work to do with undertrays, fuel filler, roll  bar covers etc if you want it to look smart.

....chopping up and modifying that Sport 160 was well received on Seloc ;)

it would probably only need to slide back first and tilt then ?

Yes, I considered putting some heavy duty ball bearing runners inside the subframe to allow the slide then making a box section on which to mount the hinge.....then I couldn't be bothered with it anymore.

Thought of hinging from the front?. I prototyped several rear lift hinges using 4 bar linkages but all were too complicated eventually deciding to hinge top centre with one very simple standard hinge. Is there a reason you are set on rear

I'd hinge anyway if someone had drawings or even better a kit or just some words of guidance! haha

Haven't you got a group buy on boot gas struts to service first, young NPC Jedi?

Just a thought on this....

If it hinged at the bottom it would pivot back and clear the exhaust, no sliding needed.  Care with the angle should make it possible to get ground clearance.  I'm just not sure if that will hinder engine access.

I am not set on the rear :) even contemplating elevation with gas struts. Got some photos of what you did?

I also looked at some heavy duty industrial ball bearing slides (similar to those found in filing cabinets) which would allow the clam to slide backwards, before tilting, in order to clear the exhaust tails....they are  readily available  . However, the main problem was sealing the filler cap against the clam so that any fuel spill while fueling would not accidently leak towards a hot manifold. Thought about a retracting mechanism which cleared the filler inwards when the clam slid backwards.
