Painting / Powder Coating Hub Carriers

When having hub carriers painted / powder coated, what do people do with the internal bore where the hub sits?

 

If it is painted / powder coated it will make it a too tight fit for the hub, but leaving it bare will result in it rusting and then seizing the hub...

 

What have other people done?

When I got mine shot blasted, then a small smudging of grease on the faces prior to painting, then when paint dry wiped of the painted grease then put a small smidge of clean grease on the faces again. Vaseline will do the same job.

There is enough room with paint. The built up rust is what seizes the gap.

If you are getting them powder coated they should block of anything that is needed, the guys I used had some kind of high temp metal tape. I think I only had to scrape out one set of holes they had over looked.

My concern was more around if the bore wasnt painted, how have people protected it from not rusting - which will then cause the hub to seize in place...

I forget exactly what I had done but I believe it was zinc coated, very thin layer that shouldn't be a problem for fitment.

I had mine galvanised (triple plate) and then passivated to prevent the zinc from being erroded.

Galvanisation should not cause problems as the buildup is quite limited and the material is relatively hard.

 

Paint/powdercoat can be an issue in the bore with the reduction in diameter and also on the mating surface between the upright and the hub pack.

 

It usually gets too thick and forms a soft(er)/compressible layer which is not good for a solid connection like you want between the hub and upright.

 

If uprights are painted/powdercoated I'd recommend removing the paint from the bore and the mating surface where the hub unit sits. Spray some corrosion inhibiter on the metal when fitting and it should be fine. Washout will be minimal/nonexistent and it should keep moisture out and stop most corrosion.

I keep the mating surfaces clean, then apply waterproof grease and wipe off.  On the inner bore I keep clean and coat with Dinitrol 3654 but you could use either on both surfaces, or any other corrosion inhibitor so as Arno says "Spray some corrosion inhibiter on the metal when fitting and it should be fine. Washout will be minimal/nonexistent and it should keep moisture out and stop most corrosion." thumbsup
