Hi

I have stage 2 SC on CS map. The engine has always ran badly if driven straight away from stone cold. It won't rev above 2-2.5k and misfires and splutters. It only lasts for maybe half a mile at most then clears, although there is always a slight flat spot at part throttle at 2.5k even when warm.

I always thought this was just a 'feature' of the CS map so never really worried about it. Work around (if I can be arsed) is to let the car idle for a few minutes from stone cold before driving.

Lately though, when this misfire happens the rad fans sometimes come on permanently. I have to stop once the car's warmed up a bit, turn the engine off and on again to clear the fans. There is no EML light. I read the ECU codes and it had 1 fault recorded but the code reader reported N/A for the code.

I just wondered if anything can be done, or anything to try. (I know, get the Dutch software..)

Is this just CS map normality and live with it, or a sign of something else wrong?

cheers

A common thing on the CS map should be ok  if the fan thing gets on you nerves fit a water  temp switch  as CS do to cars with this problem  .You have had final map done ?

The bogging down when cold you'll never get rid of ,just start the car as soon as you're in and then by the time you faff with seat belts, sunglasses and checking your hair in the mirror you're good to go :) The slight bogging at 2.5k is mapping is exactly what I had first time I got my car done. They (CS and German guy who actually maps it) were in a rush, just had one go at the map and didn't take it for a run to check it. Second time I went back to map the bigger injectors I made a point of telling them how sh*t it was. This time they went back and forth with the German guys tweaking the map 4 times and it came out bang on. Probably not what you want to hear as I'm assuming you (along with 99% of VX owners) live miles from CS. of course all went away with the Dutch map.

Thanks guys interesting. Yes it is on final map. When CS did it I was only there a couple Of hours and only heard it do 2 maybe 3 pulls on the dyno so as you say bargi perraps it's less than perfect. Well looks like the cold start thing is just how it is and I'll put up with the flat spot when warm until I buy the Dutch software.

Have you tired a new lambda sensor? My lambda was causing problems with my fan everytime I switched the car on the fan would come on as well. New lambda sorted the problem.

I had this problem a few months ago, tried all sorts to diagnose and fix it.

As others have mentioned a set of new lambdas and everything was back to normal.  :)

The Z22SE ecu use the Lambda sensor for various sanity checks, so make sure to fit an OEM type sensor. (the fan coming on is some sort of hidden fault code and can be cleared with a simple OBD reader)

With my CS map they'd disabled the lambda check for me. Didn't know until swapped to Dutch and it kept throwing an EML. Sure enough broken wires. Not sure if CS do that with all SC maps

Mine does the horrible cold stutter thing soo annoying! Only had the fan thing happen once or twice though. Shutting off and starting up again sorted that out.

My CS map bogs down, over fuels and stutters madly if I go more then 1/8 throttle in any gear below 2k rpm hot or cold.

Engine does behave badly when cold. I want to go Dutch.

Hmm based on all these comments it seems normal then - i won't go swapping lambdas just yet. Yeah I should've got the dutch software when I did the SC - Chill did try & tell me at the time - I went deaf..

Mine does it a touch.  Not bad though (I have new lambdas).  I think it's when the maps switch from slow to fast rpm.  There was something about two maps (hot and cold) below 2250 rpm and it switches to a single high rpm map above this.  The CMS map isn't quite right at the switch over (not sure if it's the high rpm or low rpm map).  This is all from what I got here some years ago when I first SC'd mine.  I believe they will sort it if you take it back for a mapping sesh.

ETA: mines just a flat spot rather than a missfire and the fans coming on should be P1171 which refers to a lean spot on the map I believe.

Ah ok - well that would make some sense.

I was just reading the 16bit fuel table blurb on the OBD2 Tuner site - interesting as it explains some , err, fudges lets say, to make an 8 bit fuel table work over 200hp. The methods described can trigger ECU emergency systems - such as fans coming on. It says.

Yeah works out around £615 at the moment, plus postage of ECU. Been emailing Peter, and reading the manual. Got trackday next week, but might have to be done after that and before National at Snetterton...

Worth every penny, I think it was just over £700 when I got it.

Yeah I think you're saving around £100 on what I bought it for so if you're gonna do it now is a very good time. And its future proof if you want to do any more tinkering.
