Price

Currently £625 on ebay direct from MMG

Build

The unit is lighter yet built better than the standard unit. This IC has a better core and slightly longer in design but is a direct swap for a standard intercooler. Only modification is to chop an inch or 2 off the intercooler pipe due to the extra length of the unit

Performance vs standard IC

Well its an improvement but the inlet temp will still climb quickly with a highly boosted VXT

For standard, or stage 1 this IC is nice upgrade. Will work as an improvement to the stage 2 but that about it.

I'm running a stage 3 map and the unit cant keep the temp below 60 on heavy boost so no good for track BUT the major advantage this IC has over standard is the ability to recover and get rid of the heat soak.

Running 18PSI the temp saw to 70-80C on the inlet but lift off the throttle in just a few seconds the temp will fall very quickly to a reasonable 30-35C (summer temps) winter will be lower

Any faster?

Well it actually is! I was shocked I think its more the fact the car runs about 10% lower IC all the time (better core) and as it lower the car can make more power. High inlet just loose bhp as the ECU shuts power down

Worth the upgrade/money?

Not sure its worth £625 but certainly an improvement and it does shave the temp off very quickly after a blast up the road which helps the heat soak Stage 2 drivers suffer, and means you don't keep losing power as the ECU begins backing power off at around 55C

Overall

A good improvement for standard, stage 1 and stage 2 due to the faster recovery times (30% faster as a guess)

But if your stage 3 or 4 you cant beat the charge cooler which is exactly the advice Courtney Sport gave me, hence they wont install IC on stage 3 any more, or don't recommend them at least

Charge Cooler if you can afford to spend £1.7k + £750 on the fitting

I recently read a magazine review on intercoolers Size didn't mean as much as u think it's the quality of the cores Basically they did same size ic test on rollers and measured heat soak between budget ic and branded stuff like airtec Results were conclusive branded stuff out performed budget stuff hands down After back to to back dyno runs on a Astra vxr between heat run they branded ic only dropped 1 bhp impressive couldn't be more different for the cheap non branded stuff As always u get what u pay for.

Assuming the tests weren't funded by the top end makers........... I know there will be quality deltas but sometimes you can't trust the mags

If a cc is 1.7k then why not tackle thet problrm by its source: boost. Get a larger turbo wich wil run lower boost for the same power. Less stress for the turbo aswell and perhaps even better tunable since Ive read stage3/4 people have torque hikups/not so great boostcontrol.

isnt the idea of small turbo that the boost is smooth?

Hence not many people go for bigger turbos as they tend to come in with a big bang?

Well, there's also a way in between. I myself am only familiar with garrett turbo's.

The 'ol T25 turbo pushes 260ish bhp @ 12-13psi with mods and is used in many stock car applications (mitsu's, Nissan etc.) and has some varieties that can push even a tad more. The T28R has the same turbinehousing and spools the same as a T25 but with about 280bhp@ 12-13 psi.

Never driven a VXT so no experience with the K-turbo's, but you guys run a lot of boost on such small turbo's for about 280-290ish bhp. Something that doesnt seems to work very well with the car design (airflow).

Chuck a td05 16g off an impreza on reckon that would go well. Good for 330bhp ish, pretty bullet proof too. Just a bugger about with manifolds and the like...

if you dont run a boot box and want a cooler that will keep the temps down then size does help.

19psi 43c inlet 320bhp

Total cost £100(£40 for the cooler and about £60 to cover all the silicone bends and ali tubing)

Those temps are with no ducting to the cooler at all, its just picking up air passing through the engine bay, with a plenum and direct air feed from each scoop it would be in the 30s

Saves having to pay big money for a small branded cooler and also you dont have the weight and the reliability issues of a chargecooling setup
