Prompted by Capt Vimes thread re Springs and not wishing to highjack his thread, I wonder if someone can help me.

I had my Nitrons fitted beginning of 2008 by Plans. I have the invoice which states that they are a Nitron Spring and damper set. I did know the spring rates at the time but now forgotten. There are no marks numbers or anything on the spring/damper to give any clues as to the rating. The springs are coated black and did once have something written on them but that has worn off. I have spoken to Nitron and they can't help. Does anyone remember what Nitron were supplying as standard rated springs then? I know that there was an option with the package to go to stiffer Ohlin springs which i didn't take up. I had a Plans Motorsport ARB fitted which is now set to fully stiff. From photos of my car on corners it really does lean and when I took a fellow VXer out at the National he said my car is much too soft. So the plan is to rectify this and as the dampers haven't been touched in 8 years, hence a refurb. However it would be nice to know what is on the car at the moment, so if anyone can give me some clues I'd be obliged.

Cheers Chris

I would hazard a guess at 375/450 I think thats the standard rates unless otherwise specced by the customer.

Bit poor that Nitron cant even tell you the standard rates they supplied back then!

Chris, if you can put a micrometer on the coil width, I can give you a rough (unscientific) idea

that does ring a bell Chris

So looking in plan, do you mean the coil diameter or the diameter of the bar that the spring is made out of, sorry if I'm being thick!

you could always measure spring length with and without 10lb weight , they sound like the faulkner springs

nitron now use hyperco (pale blue) , rather than eibach (red) , but they mainly supply to motorsport and supply/demand means joe public is their lowest priority.

the quantum springs from eliseparts are a direct swap with nitron

If you take the springs off and send them to Nitron, they can stick them on a dyno an let you know the rates. They do charge but I can't remember how much I paid. Alternatively Cornering Force can provide the same service.

So just called nitron and their springs are £55+vat per spring. That's double the cost of the quantum's from Elise parts. What would you do?

Eibach are acknowledged as market leader (that's why they're VX OE  ), Faulkner are cheap and cheerful, but they've held up a few of my cars without problem.  The cheaper end of the market do not match their given rates as closely and the material will be inferior.

That said, Nitron don't make them, so you're paying a middleman,  http://www.demon-twe...rs-race-springs

Somewhat less.

I'll do some measuring once I'm home.

I have a 450 lb spring which is 11.6 and a 375 which is 11.0, given my level of accuracy I'd guess you're on the 375/475 combo

Probably a silly question Chris but have you searched through all your VX paperwork for the spec card that Nitron usualy supply with their shocks?

no all I got from PMS was an invoice. There was a product code but Nitron didn't recognise it.

Each damper has a serial number engraved, that should be all nitron need.

I looked and couldn't find a number or any marks for that matter. The dampers were on the car and there was an area opposite the adjuster knob that I couldn't see so it could have been there.
