My N/a suddenly started sounding very "throaty" today -

I took the undertrays off to find that the interface flange between the OEM U-bend ("Pipe, Exhaust, Intermediate" Part No. 9198105) and the Front exhaust with CAT ("Pipe, Exhaust, Front" Part No. 9198100) has corroded so much that the lowest bolt has snapped, leaving a 2mm split between respective parts.

Diagram showing these (part 12 and 1 respectively) here - http://goo.gl/PI3Rnk

Photos here - http://s1083.photobu...rary/VX Exhaust

What are my options?

- Can I just clean up, remove bolts and get new fixings through?

- Do I need to buy a new U-bed and Front Exhaust?

Thanks!

Bet if you nipped to one of these local exhaust makers that they'd be able to do something with it, if not put up a wanted ad 👍

If the flanges are intact and it's the bolt that's rusted then you can just drill out the old bolts and put some new ones in. I've tried using mild steel bolts before and they were ruined in less than 12 months. I've got some stainless nuts and bolts now and they're surviving much better.

The exhaust is all stainless, the corroded parts are the bolts. Just replace them.

Drill out all the bolts, separate the flanges, clean up the faces and the mate them up again with some instant gasket.

It surprises me that the corrosion is just the bolts - from the pics I thought the outside surfaces of both flanges were delaminating due to rust? Cheers for your input so far...

Look buggered to me. Budget on new parts as a minimum.

Just occurred to me - perhaps all I need are the flanges from someone's scrapped exhaust to weld onto the existing parts then bolt together in-situ? Cheers

Oem cat, ubend and backboxes are the cheapest out there, as they get replaced a lot and are considered minimum value. So if after cleanup you have the need to replace it will also be cheap. It only starts to get a bit pricy if you can't do it yourself.

this would do for a cheap temporary fix, you would also need a pair of good quality exhaust clamps

Nice one - Liam at MMG will be having a look at it on Monday, then we'll see if it can be cleaned up and rebolted...

I have a spare Back Box in good condition. It doesn't have the brackets for the for the rubber 'hangers'.

Back box is in good nick ta - It's just the interface between the U-bend and Front Exhaust/CAT that's fooked.

I think I have exactly the same problem so would be interested to know how you got on at MMG.

I'm interested to. Wire brushed the corrosion off mine and flanges seem substantial enough to re-bolt together. Just need to drill the bolts out first and see what's what. Want to do it so I can drill out the pre-cat.

Over the phone Liam echoed what Vocky said, insofar that a sleeve is a temporary measure... Also that welding the two halves together isn't an option as minimal thickness of the exhaust will be "like welding paper". Will update!
