Buy these parts: 1/2" petrol hose, oil breather filter the fits the petrol hose and a jubilee clip. You will also need a cable tie.

Then it starts raining!

Locate oil breather:

Remove using a similar tool (fairly easy to get off):

Clean using these - I think this is important to help prevent it coming off:

Put hose in engine bay to measure up and cut:

Cut hose to relevant size and add the jubilee clip and filter:

Push the hose over the breather hole and tighten jubilee clip - if it's a tight fit (1/2" pipe won't be) you can heat the pipe in boiling water to soften it:

I held the jubilee clip close to the metal plate thingy that the gear selector connects to with my lever tool. It feels very secure and I would struggle to pull it off:

Cable tie breather to the header tank under the clam to prevent water getting into it:

Posted Image20151220_132308 by Richard Fanders, on Flickr

I added velcro to stop any possible rattling:

Posted Image20151220_132605 by Richard Fanders, on Flickr

Then clean my car after 1000 miles and two track days:

Posted Image20151220_151536 by Richard Fanders, on Flickr

And off to Sainsbury's to buy my mum a birthday present:

I forgot the mention that this modification is essential for track days to prevent oil coming out the breather hole. It went on my wheel at snetterton.

Very true!

This happened to me and I instantly thought "its dead. sh*t.". Luckily there were org`ers on hand to tell me where it was from.

Thank You Gaffer !  B)

Nice "How to", but what's the advantage to do this ?

Size are same for a SC engine ?

Thank you. If you track your car oil spits out the breather hole. I'm not sure about SC cars, depends if you're using the original gearbox. I think the original gearbox is called an F23?

Yep, F23 for NA and Turbo albeit different variants... your mod works with either as the selector mechanism and breather outlet are in the same location.  Only other variant is an M32 transplant but few have done this.

Also I hear some people put the Zafira equivalent of the F23 gearbox in these cars to increase revs. I'm not sure of the advantage of an M32 transplant although I hear they're unreliable gearboxes.

Yep, different final drive on Zaf F23 for a closer ratio.  M32 is 6 speed and another way of achieving a close ratio but with the added advantage of keeping the revs down when cruising on the motorway.  Like you, I heard they are even more chocolaty than the F23.

Would this work? I’m thinking of blanking off the existing gearbox breather and adding the adapter I have made to the fill hole. The new solid pipe would have a small filter on the end.

Hi,
Just an update for anyone still wanting to put a catchpot on there gearbox breather.
I have purchased this off ebay which seems pretty good for the money.

https://www.ebay.co....tm/143680694242

Plus some 15mm pipe

https://www.ebay.co....tm/114165963873

Then I'm using a makalu clamp at the gearbox end.

I currently have just a pipe leading up to the header tank, with no filter and I'm finding it's putting oil out, which ends up in my nearside rear wheel, which isn't good. The makalu fitting had never come off, which the old jubilee did.

Hopefully this should resolve it. You just need to move the inlets and blanking caps around on the catchpot to suit, they are all interchangeable.

I had that catch can, like £100. I'm sure that's his much it cost 4 years or so ago.

Yeh when I looked they where pretty expensive for what they are but this comes in at under £20 Inc pipe, should do the job, just as well.
