Zlet Drive Belt Tension Pulley Torx Bolt Rounded, Any Tips?

hi all,

 

I am trying to change the cam belt on my 2006 tubby. I have got as far as far as trying to slacken the tensioner pulley by freeing the torx bolt. Even with the correct torx socket the bolt hasn't budged but instead rounded the torx bolt teeth. I can't believe in Vauxhalls infinite wisdom they used a torx bolt instead of a standard bolt in such a location. Has anyone had this issue before with this bolt? If so how did you get the bolt and therefore the tensioner pulley out?

Im guessing you have tried to smash on a slightly larger torx bit.

Hammer in a bigger torx bit. File some flats on 2 sides and use some grips.

Im guessing you have tried to smash on a slightly larger torx bit.

Yep tried this. The engines still in the car so there's not much room to get a good smashing hammer angle

Will try and file the sides off the bolt. It's just with the semi circle shape of the bolt there's not much grab available to grip. Such a crazy bolt to use here.

If you have a dremel, you could cut across the bolt to cut the washer out from underneath.

Dremel with deburring tool to grind the top off.

All of the above work, you could try hitting the metal adjustment part with select big flat screw driver and hammer to hopefully loosen the bolt initially I have selection of bolt removing bits and they have worked even on the domed heads Also different torx sockets over the years vary and a decent one can usually do the trick Its either been way over tightened and or bit seized DG

Another way is a hammer and chisel, make a notch then knock it round.

A centre punch also works.

Some are 13mm head m8x50mm, spec must have changed to torx bolt but they round out easy.

Once I get it sorted I will be replacing with a proper standard bolt, thanks for the size spec.

Thanks for all the tips. I used my dremel with cutter disk to make a slot at the best angle to then hammer against the largest flat head screwdriver I have. I repeated this process multiple times to loosen the bolt. After a about 3-4 turns I was able to get an 18mm socket over it to ratchet it out.
