Dear all, For those of you that have carried out this mod - I would really like to know if it's worth doing? What difference did it make? Is it worth the cost - £300 fitting plus the cost of the parts? I'm running a stage 2 VXT. Thanks for your advice, Jon

I'd say it's not worth that cost. The only difference I noticed was higher vibrations on idle. I have a VXT stage 1.5.

It's worth doing, particularly if you're getting your bottom end rebuilt. Fitting cost seems quite high to me though, I'd shop around. You can pick up the parts needed from an old X20XEV engine from a scrapyard, much cheaper than the £150 or so that Courtenay want for it.

In terms of stage 1 or 2 maps , this is a bigger consideration how far I will allow a customer cars to map it , than say a different backbox.

It spins with eccentric load at double crank rpm and its driven direct off the crank and has a noticeable drag on that you can see on ignition timing.

With it there I limit rpm to 6800 , with it removed then its okay for 7300

Plus you get an extra 0.75l oil in the sump which is good for track use.

Thanks gents,

I already have a kit that's been sat in the garage for a year or so that's not an issue.

But the £300 cost of fitting seems unjustifiable if there isn't that much benefit. I'm trying to achieve an optimum stage 2 tune. I do not want to go silly and reach stage 4 as I believe stage 2 is the sweet spot in terms of drivability.... I am not competent enough to fit this myself so its likely that I will put the kit up for sale soon.

If anyone tells me that they feel its worth the cost, I might still do it but based on the above I think you have helped me to make my decision.

Thanks again, take care.

Jon

I'm sure thats over the odds on fitting , if its combined with a oil change it should be a lot less.

Give Jeremy at Back on Track a call as from memory when they did mine there was not that much labour to drop it out and tap/fill the oil ways.

Mine is deleted, i'm stage 2. I was told it releases a few extra horses, it was all done in one go, so cant comment on how many. I would say that I don't feel I have any issues with extra vibration. I didn't notice any change to be honest.

That was new to me! Does a lightweight flywheel influence your choice of rpm limit too? Or is it more a precaution not to damage the balancer shafts when you don't increase the rpm limit with them installed?

lightweight flywheel will let engine overshoot the lower rpm limit , but really a lot of the character of engine is defined in the map. with extra work, this is raised further to 7500-7700
