I live in Surrey but am prepared to travel a fair distance for the right dog/breeder (bit like buying a VX ) Any recommendations? A Cavapoo is a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel cross with a Poodle also known as Cavoodles.

Any particular reason for a cav rather than another poodle cross?

Not sure there is any such thing as a "reputable" breeder of these types of "breeds". I'm sure they are nice wee dogs but I find it hard to get my head round this fashion for crossing things with poodles. It seems to me folk try to think of what cross could have the funniest name rather than what it's actual characteristics will be, often picking breeds which aren't exactly known for their good health, Cavaliers, as lovely as they are, being a good example of that (I genuinely like cavaliers but they do have many known health problems). These fashionable crosses are often very expensive too, which is strange for a mongrel. Why not see what's at your local dog shelter? There are often interesting cross pups there needing homes? Sorry to be a bit of a downer on the subject. If you really have your heart set on one of these I would say avoid gumtree and at least try to go somewhere where the parents can be seen. Never agree to meet someone with the pup, always try to get it from where it has been born, even if you have to travel. We see sick pups all the time that have been picked up at a train station or a car park after finding them on gumtree. That advice goes for all breeds of dog. I can put you in contact (Suffolk) with an excellent breeder of cockerpoo's (both mini and toy). The wife and I where going to buy a pup from her but she had no choc boys at the time and another breeder we had seen had a choice from 2 so we never went with her. I know a pup from hers and it is an excellent dog and perfectly healthy, though she does tend to have a waiting list!

 

I also know another breeder (Suffolk) that has recently started breeding cockerpoo's and should be starting to do F3's in the next year or so.

 

One slight word of warning is if you are after a doodle for allergies then you still cannot count on it 100% though even if they do shed it will likely end up way better than another breed. I'm incredibly lucky my poo does not shed at all and has never cause my allergies to suffer.

EDIT: Just looked it up... So in essence it is just a mixed spaniel... hope they didn't think that would make it especially interesting.

 

According to Theo (who is obsessed with dogs) refers to Pickle (our ginger and white cat) all the time as Pickle Catdog... now that would be cool.

I always thought that a dog bred from different species was called a mongerel?  Are these fancy names a pretence that they're not.  Bit like Tigons and Ligers.  My dog's a cross between a Schipperke and Whippet but when people ask me what he is I don't go all posh and say oh, he's a Schippet or a Whipperke.  I just say he's a wilfully disobedient totally faithless nuisance, do you want him?  I can wrap him up now if you do.

It's a bit pot luck really.  You don't know what you're getting and it could be good or bad.  Next door have a rescue German Shepherd, the biggest I've ever seen, huge, and it's totally aggressive towards other dogs to the point of being almost uncontrollable (the woman can't/daren't take it out).  He takes it out all muzzled up with two leads (in case one breaks??).  It is fine with people tho', lets me in no problem if I'm letting him out in the back garden if they're both working.  A bit of a heart stopper the first time I went in alone and he came bounding down the stairs at me.  When they're out it spends its time upstairs at the window barking endlessly at any noise or anything that moves.  When they leave, it it barks solidly for half an hour.  Upsets my dog no end 'cos he's a sensitive little thing.

Yep mongrels, 'pure breed' is the opposite so your dog breeds everyone knows. The thing is most people don't remember that is that all dogs are effectively mongrels if you go back far enough, as humans have breed them to have specific properties. The new wave of poodle or pug crosses is no different really, the poodle has been breed with other breeds to give a hypo-allergenic dog that has other qualities people would find appealing such as size and temperament. The fact that some breeders feel they can charge ridiculous prices from them is purely greed (and I guess demand)

You don't have to get a massive german shepherd.

 

Been looking after this dog for an evening. The owner is a friend of the girlfriend. You couldn't meet a sweeter more gentle dog. She was part of a litter dumped on the streets of Ibiza.

 

It does make me angry that dogs like this are struggling to get homes while breeders are making money.

Massive German shepherds for the win!! My Loki is a 5 gen pedigree from a breeder up in the midland. Met parents and grand parents. Dad was crufts best of breed winner in 2011 I believe! Just got to be careful with pedigree large breeds.
