An early 996 3.4 with an engine conversion (not Porsche) appeals to me..

In fact, isn't the 3.4 a much more reliable engine, and doesn't suffer any where like as many terminal issues as the early 3.6's?

Yep apparently 3.4 996s and all 986 Boxsters don't have the bore scoring issue.

Could be wrong, but 911 3.4 is a M96 and the Cayman 3.4 is a M97 engine, so different engine models effectively.

It seems the larger displacement variant of each type seem to be less reliable - the early Boxster 2.5 and 2.7 aren't too bad (I've read) or have the same issues as the 3.2 (M96).

Correct. It could all be internet exaggeration, think of the amount of 911s you see driving around day in day out...

What isn't these days? A few people get a problem and want the world to know about it, tens of thousands who don't get the same problem are just happy and remain quiet

Porsche engine rules are as follows 2.7 all good All other 996 and gen 1 997 you don't buy. All gen 2 is ok. It's not internet heresay either sadly. Cayman is far better value for money but all are tough to find with a decent spec. I have a 1983 911SC in addition to the gen 2 Cayman S. The SC is great fun to drive its like a sporty tractor. Very agricultural makes a nice noise and looks like a work of art. Prices seem to have stabilised over the last year but a good functional car will start about 30k. I'm doing a backdate/outlaw job on mine at the moment which is taking ages. Will be on the market in spring 2018 more than likely. Mexico blue with the 2.7 bumpers and ducktail plus roll cage and buckets so should be pretty good.

Nah that would be plain silly!, me and a pal bought a mega mile early 996 a couple of years ago to abuse and th plan was to strip it out and turn it into a track car but after a couple of track days the engine shat itself,we did look at a bi turbo Audi engine but this wouldn't really work in a 911,only in a boxster,so it's looking like a v8 is the way to go,a bit of a distant plan at the moment.
