Hi Guys

Suspect alternator issues, my battery light came on whilst on-route to work, this was shortly after replacing

As i got closer 20mile trip, all dash lights started to come on (battery draining i take it)

Ive checked the alternator belt and its still there, I able to borrow a volt metre to check the battery terminals on sunday, would the following work for me to identify if the alternator is at fault

-1 jump start car, remove battery connections from battery at this point the car should stay ticking over as its getting power from the alternator, if screwed, the engine will die.

Is there any know cable issues that i need to check before replacing the alternator, any other tests?

Next Qs worst case alternator replacement is it a diy job? ive been trying to find a guide for a turbo, not having much luck....from what ive read easiest way, remove rear wheel and arch liner gain access through this route.

If i need to replace it will be done in the cold in my work car park, is it a fairly easy job, im not great with spanner, however as kid replaced countless alternators and starter motor on all of my dads fords, however those cortina's had load of space to work in.

Best place to buy a replacement if need?

Cheers for looking

I'd just wait for the multimeter to test it. If you don't want to wait, they're dead cheap to buy from places like maplin.

Test with a multi meter, plenty guides on how to test on YouTube and then remove if it's dead, recon or replace. Mine died a month or so ago on my tubby. Accessed through the rear wheel, removed liner. Bit tight but found it was the easiest way as from the bottom was not possible due to aftermarket exhaust, top was too tight. Took me around 40 mins to remove and same for sticking it back in. Just need to get round to putting the pics I took up with text typed on them.

Jump start car, remove battery connections from battery at this point the car should stay ticking over as its getting power from the alternator, if screwed, the engine will die.

I don't think that is right, as the alternator feeds the battery, which then in turn feeds the car.

Alternators die quite a bit on 15 year old cars. Batteries also die quite a lot too, so you need to identify the problem before swapping one of them out.

Other than a multimeter test, you could disconnect the current battery leads off the battery, then extend the battery leads from the VX220 to another car battery with jump leads (say one in another non running car). Then start your VX up and let it idle for a while. Then see if the new battery is being drained slowly (identified by your dashboard lights starting to light up), if this happens then your alternator is at fault, otherwise it is your VX220 battery is at fault. Simplz.
