Have you looked at a KTM supermoto? One of the most fun bikes I've ever owned. I'd test ride both that and the hypermotard before making a decision.

No I havent, its just that you mention you're getting on a bit for a sports bike riding position and I'm the same and was considering amongst other things a Hypermotard. My mate had one and I just sat on it, theyre very high. I might go and find one at a dealer and have a go, I'll let you know how I get on if i do.

The Hyperstrada is basically the same bike but with luggage a bigger screen and about 3" shorter apparently so if your short in the leg that may be the better option.

You qualify by being short in your third leg Barty Boy.

Had a Hyperstrada 821 as a courtesy bike when the rad went on my 848 just before the warranty expired. Now before you think youngster as I've got a sports bike I did the sensible riding position in my forties & I'm past that now :) Anyway had to ride it back from Bristol & hated it, had it for a week, slightly preferred it when I took it back but if you really want that sort of riding position I found my old Speed Triple more fun, so I really would get a decent test ride before you decide that it's what you want

Having had plenty of sports bikes, nakeds and a supermoto I'd say there are 3 key differences moving from a 600 supersports bike to a hypermotard

1 - Upright seating position - personally I'll never own a bike with a racing crouch seating position again. I'm faster with an upright position as I can see more and feel more in control. On a race track it makes sense. On the road I just don't get it.I guess this one's a personal choice. My first upright bike was an aprilia pegaso that i bought as a winter hack. It opened my eyes to life after sports bikes.

2- Engine. A v-twin is totally different to an IL-4. I love v-twin's but if you go for the 800cc motard you'll get bored of the power quickly. I'm sure the 1100 would be a laugh, however some just don't get on with v-twins after IL4's. You need to own a v-twin at some point to decide if they're for you.

3 - Motard - long travel suspension and seating position on the tank. It's different again to a naked street fighter. I loved the KTM riding position and the super high quality WP forks/dampers were awesome but it took a while to get used to. Just don't feel the need to stick your foot out and try backing it in!

The main reason I swapped the KTM for my s1000r (apart from writing it off) was that it was unreliable (tank swell/leak, fuel pump, wheel bearings, cutting out in traffic etc.). I also wanted ABS for the daily winter commute and more power (more is always better.. sort of).

At the end of the day.. just go for it. If you don't get on with it, sell it and buy something else.
