Did one last weekend took about 2 hours with cutting out some rotten bolts and labelling everything to help put it all back (which you could do in advance with some plastic bags or takeaway containers).

Sorry to dredge up an old subject but I’ve hit a brick wall with removing mine. I knew someone had taken the clam off previously, but the numpty that did it has cross threaded the bolt that goes into the pillar above the door hinge. I’ve removed all other fixings and the door but I cannot get the Allen bolt out. It’s a SS 5mm hex which started to come out but stuck solid after 1 turn and will not budge. I’ve tried every technique I can To get it out but it’s now rounded. Short of cutting the mounting bracket has anyone got any bright ideas please?!

The clam needs repairing due to some previous bodges (not by me!) so a little damage isn’t the end of the world but it would be nice to avoid that. Any ideas appreciated!

cut bracket, remove clam, drill out bolt, repair bracket.

if the bolt is slightly removed you can get a hacksaw blade in to cut the bolt

If you can find something like this

https://www.homedepo..._-300533468-_-N

that's sufficiently compact to fit in the limited space, you could use short drill bits to drill out the bolt head with small then larger bits until the head comes off, then remove clam and then remove bolt.

Other than that, as Batman says.

Problem solved. Used my Dremel to cut a slot in the bolt head and managed to use a screwdriver to get it out. 5 hours spent on one bolt because someone got lazy! GRRRR!!!! Clam is off anyway - thanks for the suggestions gents

Before you put it all back together, carefully run a tap through the captive nuts and apply copper slip to all the bolts. chinky chinky

Speedy Fasteners do complete and various partial kits for the VX.  Worth spending a few quid and stainless looks pretty!
