A general question about any car - not necessarily VXs

Does cat C/D status affect the insurance on these cars, i.e. has anyone had any trouble getting them insured or are the premiums higher?

I ask because a friend was considering buying a cat c car (not vx) and was asking my advice, but not having bought a car with this status I wouldn't know.

Thanks

Had a few other cat c and d cars inc my current Vx Never had any issue with insurance Just need to remember that should it be involved in another accident the payout for a previously wrote off car may be less

Insurance companies will however ask you if the car is a Cat car.  So it is possible that some insurers may refuse to insure or hike premiums.  Otherwise why would they ask or care?

Just means they pay less in an accident . Friend got stung, she didn't know her car was a cat car until she was involved in an accident and she got pennies for her car

Probably best to get an agreed evaluation on a VX. Costs £25 I think from Classic Lines I'm with, just a question sheet to fill in and a few pictures and they agreed with my value 👍

I've a question regarding CAT cars.  I ask this because the more I look, sometimes I find CAT cars are more freely available for the VXs than the non-CATS.

Do you guys think (having seen these cars sell over the years),  that the CAT price resale value matches the depreciation/appreciation curve of the Non-cats?

i.e, if there were 2 cars identically spec'd.  One was CAT, the others wasnt.  2016 they are worth 9k and 12k respectively.  In 2 years time, would the CAT car still be 3k less value, or worse?

pretty much yes.  May just be harder to sell as a lot of people are put off no matter what the price.

I'd imagine there comes a point where, yes a C/D will be less than a clean one, but they wont ever be worthless...

The implied £3K (fixed) argument holds no water should, for some unholy reason, a clean one be worth £3K

Also, a very very well looked after/repaired C or D would be worth as much, if not more than a shed of a "clean" one. IMHO of course.

They get written off for as much as cosmetic damage to the clam or broken head lights. Whilst some non cat cars have had damage also and just been repaired maintaining their clean status. I think on a specialist sports car the cat status is largely irrelevant because they get stripped and modified anyway its only relevant if you intend to keep a low mileage completely standard car and are really bothered by re-sale values.

Might even see the gap narrow as there becomes fewer exceptional vx's left on the road. Might be a sound purchase 👍

The other halfs 4x4 is a CAT C, insurance never even asked.  Also sorted out insurance for the sister-in-law and brother-in-law both got CAT C/D cars, no issue whatsoever.

I need a little bit of help from you guys on a question concerning a Cat D car (non VX) that I made an enquiry on through a dealer.

It was advertised as a Cat D, but when I asked for details of the damage/theft or whatever it was that made it Cat D, the dealer said they didn't know and just bought the car as was.

Firstly I'm sure you'll probably say just stay well away from it and that was my first thought, but thinking on a bit further, surely they would have asked the same question before they bought it in, which makes me suspicious.

So my question is, what other ways in addition to the usual vehicle check systems are there of finding out the cars history, so that I can make an informed decision on it?

Yep, I think this is the only legal way. You'll probably find them online on Facebook etc.
