Hi, I read some here about toelinks but still curious what you suggest in my case.

I have a vx220 turbo 7200miles and have no clue how old my toe links are but there is no play in the ball-joints and the rubber is whole.

I have standard tyres and standard suspension and do 1-2 trackdays/year.

Could one of my toelink just break in half, or am I "safe" if I change the bults and nuts?

regards Michael

Hi Michael

Good questions, but only you know how you drive of course.

If you know how to check for play that is a good start and it seems your usage is not so hard and on standard tyres.

You cannot change the nuts and bolts as the ball joints component have their own threaded section.

It is not common for units to fail without a good reason but also hard to see what is going on inside the joint itself, sometimes they detach if over loaded with the bearing housing coming off of the section connected to the subframe.

Most failures tend to be track related and if you planned to use sticky tyres and/or you a very spirited driver then it makes sense to swap to an uprated system.

There is no hard answer to your question, some like to change just for the peace of mind so it is also personal.

hope this helps.

:)

Seriously, don't mess about here.

1. Watch the videos on this thread http://www.vx220.org...track-their-vx/

2. Hand over a very reasonable sum of money to Gaz@Spitfire for his latest toe link kit

3. Drive on track with confidence that you are not going to get speared into a wall without warning

If you contact us via the messaging system on here please we can send you the full spec sheet and brace fitting guide which shows all the options and has plenty of high res images and detail.

Once we know how you use the car and which uprights you have fitted we can give you exact prices.

Basically it is the lightest, strongest and easily the most durable kit, even more so than kits fitted with uprated bearings i.e NMB, the reliability is such that we offer a 3 year warrenty on the bearings, you can expect a minimum of five and the rest of the kit should last the life of the car as it made from superior materials and better protected than the car itself.

Ironically not only are they cheaper than the NMB kits but due to the longevity they will probably work out cheaper in the long term than the budget kits as well when the replacement bearings and the subsequent geo is added.

Made to order and constructed from aerospace aluminium alloys, fully assembled and set for bump. Options available for M12 conversion and full race.

Just a quick safety note. I'd been asking specialists (naming no names) to check my toe-links for the last couple of years as I was concerned. Everyone told me mine were fine and no need to worry. I ignored them in the end as I wasn't enjoying driving it as hard as I'd have liked, constantly worrying about being thrown into a field when the links snapped. I purchased the Spitfire kit and took it to GST Performance in Newmarket. My toe-links were seized solid and were an accident waiting to happen. In my view, checking for play isn't good enough, they need a full on inspection off the car.

That says more about you and the 'specialists' you have been using.  The joints can be checked for movement by rotating the tie rod, there's no need to remove.  I checked my Spitfires yesterday, even though they're only a couple of years old, they can still be fitted with the joints at the opposite extremes of their movement and moving the bar tells me all's well.

Only thing to add is that lots of people think track days will hurt the links more than road work, but it's probably more the other way around. If you hit a pot hole in the road, the G force through the car is massive. I've seen some sheared links at my local specialist, and one snapped without warning on a roundabout.

I think you miss the point of what I was saying. I'm not a mechanic, I don't pretend like a lot of people on here to know anything about cars or suspension. I pay people to sort my car out for me, people that are meant to know what they're doing. When people tell me they've checked things for play and they're fine, I believe them. To find out there wasn't play because they were seized solid. Well my question is how many other people are driving around with seized up toe-links? To start questioning me or the "specialists" I use, apart from being pointless, (to which half this forum are likely to be fcuked by all accounts then) doesn't really prompt people to stop and think does it? My links were 16 years old, and for a few hundred quid it wasn't worth worrying about anymore Meanwhile....
