I am pretty certain to be purchasing a new back box for my VX. I'm a fan of the VS exhaust sound but it is just too full on when sat at standstill and low revs. Thus, realistically I'm looking at the Piper or Milltek. I have no experience of the Piper but am told its not as full on as the VSE. The Milltek has agreat reputation for being sensible at standstill and low revs but opens up later through the revs. However, a new version appears to be going for a louder effect: Thorney: "...the NA has never got any louder than 87db (about the same as my M3) so there is room to get more noise from it to satisfy peoples desires. There is no more power from it as that was already pretty good, just a little louder with the same tone. In production now, should be available for delivery in 3 weeks time" (as posted this week) Does this mean that the new Milltek will directly compete with the Piper? Will the new Milltek maintain its nature of being sensible volume until you get up the rev range?

The very useful table in this LINK
says the milltek is 93dB...probably as per advertising...but Thorney thinks it is 87dB.

I say 87db as Rubbers (he has one of the first MIllteks and has 20k on it) was 87db at Castle Combe, I'm sur eon average 93db is right. The only reason for the update (its hardly a redesign) is to get more volume from it due to various people suggesting it do 'do with a bit more'. Milltek don't do LOUD, not their style at all - more about quality and useful noise not noise at all costs. I've not heard the Piper, I'm sure its lovely but IMO (both as a consumer and a represetntative) the Milltek is impossible to beat. I've still not heard a VXT exhaust which can compete - quiet on the motorway buit great noise when you accelerate - class design which comes from experience I guess.

Is that on general sale?... ...there are of course lots of other options as shown in the table (Is yours on there? ) I think I just reduced it to the ones I can easily lay my hands on!

That sounds like what I'm after! :groupjump:
...but just ensuring that the same characteristics on tick-over and motorways is going to be kept!
sounds like it is... B)

Brad, yes it's available for general sale. They can make one up for you (full system or back box only) from the jig, so they can have it ready for you when you turn up for fitting. All you have to do is give them a call. And they're local ;)

Mine isn't in the table, because I don't have a volume for it, or weight, or power gain. If they measure the volume at Bedord, I'll post it up, but I'm pretty sure it's "louder than Rubber's, quieter than BogBrush's", so somewhere around 92-95 I would have thought

ooOOOooo, I really am losing touch with the board at the moment. Must have missed that post too!

Sounds interesting. I like my VSE but if i move to a one-car solution i think it would do my head in after a while. Already go a bit deaf after a good hoon! :)

Usually around £400 thumbsup

There are 2 schools of thought around them. One school (the Ricky school) claim that they give no performance gains. The other claims you do get a performance gain and you get improved throttle response.
Having looked through a standard cat and a 100 cell/in. race cat I have no doubts that it does have a positive effect, in the same way that removing the pre-cat does. The original cat looks like a a Cadbury's Crunchy, the race cat looks so much more free flowing

I'll bet the price of the system that more air flows through the system with a 100 cell race cat than without. I think Ricky's point wass whether you needed an engine remap to take advantage of that fact, whilst it helps its not necessary.
