Hi I'm new to the forum and just purchased a NA 220 and have been offered a 180bhp 1.8 type r engine and box plus anything else I'd need of the car but I'm wondering if this has been done before or if it's worth doing at all , I know it's a common swap with the s1 but not seen anything about the vx doing the swap . Any help would be appreciated .....pete

Dunno about type R engine.

Here's a K24 conversion.

It's common swap for a 2.0 k20 type r engine in the s1 Not common for a 1.8 type r

Why?

I completely see why you'd want to replace a dud K-series with a K20 engine; you'll get a decent hike in power and greater reliability.

However there's very little power difference between a 1.8 and the 2.2 L engine already fitted (as well as less torque). For the money, why not just supercharge the current engine?

I wouldnt swap the b18c engine you are refering to out of an dc2 integra. Great engine but its had its day. A 2.0 k20a engine however is a very worthwhile swap. Not only is it basically a competition spec motor the gearbo ratios are far better then the vectra/astra box in the vx220. The easiest route for more power hwever is the standard gm supercharger kits which are about £2k fitted if you do the work yourself and net about 250bhp at the fly

It was only a thought because the engine and box wouldn't cost me anything but after doing more research I think supercharge is the way forward . Thankyou for all the comments 👍🏼

I can understand anyone wanting a screamer engine in their vx. Nothing wrong with supercharging, the cost versus gains is hard to ignore. Where as NA tuning is the opposite.

I don't think I will ever go supercharged but I do keep dreaming of a screamer!!!

Just because the egging was free, does not mean the swap will be easy or cheap. If you have the skills to fab mounts, get shafts modded etc then sure go for it.... But at the same time it sounds like the 1.8 is a bit of a wet fish compared to even the lowly z22 For an na 'screamer' I'd get the old pig iron 20xe, fit jenveys and something like dta. Plus cams and bottom end tweaks etc to pull a happy 220ish bhp and have proper noise :)
