Hi all,

I've been having an intermittent problem recently whereby the ABS light would come on, and occasionally when I pressed the brake pedal it was rock hard and the front wheels locked up easily whilst trying to slow down. A moment later the pedal was OK again.

(Speedo working OK, so not an issue with the rear left sensor). This has caused me to lose confidence in the brakes so I'm not enjoying the car as I should :-(

Anyway, I just had a call from the garage who are looking into it and they said that there is no communication with the ABS ecu.

I've been using this garage for years and am confident they know how to code read, but the message was via the receptionist who simply told me that and asked me to come over so the mechanic could talk to me about next steps.....

I'm heading over in a few hours, and hope you guys can give me some advice/pointers as to what the problem could be and why theres no comms with the ABS ecu.

Any help appreciated

ta

Michael

its entierly possible that they dont have a K-Line tool akin to Tech2... If they are just using an OBDII tool then it wont see a healthy ABS unit let alone a dead one.

Not sure what tool they are using at the garage but this sometimes happens with a interrupted connection or connection timeout. Not happened on my VX as i hardly need to plug into it but has on other cars.

Try this:

Turn off the OBD tool and disconnect from OBD port, then turn off ignition and take key out. Then, start over and only enter the ABS module.

If they are using op com I find I have to tell the system my car is an Astra for it to find the abs ecu

If the ABS light isn't illuminated, you wont find a fault even if your garage can connect to it. Pretty sure the ABS ECU doesn't store pending faults or historic faults like the main ECU.

Just get the wheels off and carefully check the sensor harnesses in each wheelarch - it's 99% certain it'll be a corroded wire in one of the arches. There's instructions on here for checking the continuity of the loom with a multimeter and which pairs run where if you can be arsed to search (I can't be).
