well I think it is. Lights on dash come on, charge cooler pump kicks in, but nothing on pressing the button.

It has been a bit of a miscreant over the last 10 years so not surprised if it has finally given up on me.

I seem to remember this is a dash off job? anyone got a how to guide? Any pointers?

you know what, you are right. the last time I used the search it was a p.o.s. so have never used it since. I guess that is progress.

Just need to find some time to start pulling things off the car

If you have the hands of a child you may be able to get away with removal of the radio and cage to pull the connection tight or test with a paperclip before going to the trouble of dash removal... first time it takes a while... browse google images and you'll find a handy picture of the dash with top removed and big red arrows pointing to each of the screws :)

good advice, thanks  - I saw the picture of the dash which is great, and I'll have a look at the replacement part you have oblomov.

Unfortunately I don't have child like hands, although I could employ the hands of my children... Scrap that they'll want money or will moan about working conditions / pay / abuse!

I'm guessing there is a specific tool to remove the blaupunkt stereo - will need to have a look at that. This also gives me the excuse to fix the heater controls that were broken by the garage 8 years ago (of course, they knew nothing about it), and swap out the stereo, maybe...

Blaupunkt may well be the two pronged U shaped metal keys... if it has 4 holes, 2 left / 2 right, of about 3 mm in diameter then it is... just use 4 x stick-like things such as kebab sticks... poke em all in at the same time and pull ;)

thumbsup  I think from memory it is the 4 holes type affair. Just need to find some time (and light) to get on with it.

I had my MOT last week... all it does is shame me into realising how few miles I do in it now. 400 miles last year, and £700 to insure/tax/MOT. With fuel that's £2 a mile. At least there was no depreciation :D

On reflection, could it be one of the relays in the boot? I seem to recall these can cause issues as well. I've assumed its the starter button as when I press it nothing happens, but maybe there is something easier to look at first before I start removing things.

Any suggestions?

It would seem the fairies have been out this weekend as it started first go last night!

When I get some time I'm going to look at the relay connection as a starting point as that's much easier than removing the dash!

Thanks for the help :)

Hi, just reading this again, I had issues with mine a while ago. Like you, I checked connections, fuses, relay's etc.

It turned out to be the starter motor itself, well actually the solenoid. You'd press the button repeatedly and eventually it would go.

I took the motor off the car and connected to the battery with jump leads. Then connected a trigger cable, nothing, gave it a tap and tried again it worked.

Replaced the motor, and it's been ok since (touch wood!!)
