Hi all

just looking for a bit of advice on PCs...

I've currently got a really old desktop PC (about 10 years old, still running XP) that I want to get shot of and replace with a laptop.

I rarely use the PC (mostly use iphone or PS4) but would like a laptop so I can store all my music / photos and sync with itunes.

I was thinking of getting a super cheap laptop (they seem to start around £130) and an external hard drive (around £30).

That way I could copy all my info from the desktop onto the hard drive and then simply plug the hard into the laptop to transfer the data, as well as have it for additional storage (as the cheap laptops don't have a lot of space).

Any thoughts/opinions/recommendations?

ta

Michael

I needed a new 'laptop' so purchased a HP laptop from Tesco.

Internals are basically the same. Spending extra money buys you build quality and support.

HP are a proper grown up manufacturer so always a decent shout.

A laptop with a slower processor but with SSD will feel miles faster in everyday use.

Other than the fact it's 10 years old...

its 10 years old.

Its slow.

It takes up too much space (hence I want a laptop)

It runs XP, which isn't compatible with my iphone and itunes anymore (they didn't mention that when I got a new iphone so I can't sync it and get my music onto my phone)

why not buy an ipad with bluetooth keypad

I want USB ports, DVD drive and easier ability to use it for work stuff when needed. Plus, how would I transfer existing music/photos/documents from a desk top to an iPad? Also, I only want to shell out £200 or lower. There are laptops that do what I need for that budget. I'll see what's about on 'black Friday' and take it from there...

Making things small costs. A £200 desktop will always outperform a £200 laptop. Batteries also cost money, as does a screen, keyboard etc. Which is all factored into the cost of a laptop. So if you don't NEED a laptop (assuming you already have a keyboard, mouse, screen etc from your old PC) consider a cheap / used desktop. Just bear in mind a sub £200 laptop will be built to fit a market need. I.E. people that want a sub £200 PC. So just be aware it will be built with the cheapest components available. Don't expect it to stay "fast" for very long or the battery to last (hold a good enough to charge to use it unplugged) very long.

No worries, feel free to drop me a message if you want me to look at any potential purchases. Not trying to outright say don't get a laptop, but don't expect it to last the 10 years your desktop did if you get one within your stated budget.

As an example this would kick the arse of any similarly priced laptop https://www.ebay.co....tm/122222066520 With any used / reconditioned compiter I'd recommend re-installing the OS from scratch. I can talk you through this if you don't have a tech savvy mate that can pop round and do this for you 🍻🍻

What budget have you got in mind for a new laptop?  Anything sub the £200 mark I think is always a little slow and you will be wishing you spent a little more.

it'll only be used very occasionally - maybe once every 8 or 9 weeks, and if i use it for work stuff in the event of a snow day then I'll be using the work network over broadband.

The vast majority of my internet browsing is either on the iphone or the PS4 (or the work PC when in the office)

Don't think my needs warrant me spending much more than basic....

Keeping your data on a 10 year old computer is no problem if you don't mind losing it. If you really don't want to loose data make sure it's stored at different locations as a backup. It's not expensive or difficult to do and can save a lot of grief. Get a backup external drive and leave it at your grandma's or somewhere.
