When I checked my oil level on Sunday I had to fill up around a litre. My normal regime means I check once a month and add just a little. On Monday I had to add another litre. Same on Tuesday, by now everywhere I parked was marked by an oil slick. Today I checked at lunch time and had hardly lost any oil. I have not checked this evening as I got home so late but will check in the morning before setting off for work.

I do the same journey to work and back every day, total round trip is about 55 miles.

There is a lot of oil around the flywheel end of the engine and even some on top of the oil filter/cooler casting.

Could anyone kindly tell me if this is likely to be a oil filter gasket failure or is there a breather around this area that could be causing this issue.

Maybe there is a different gasket that could fail causing this problem?

Any helpful comments would be appreciated, Paul

i would check the oil filter seals on the sandwich plate.

Losing 1L in one day is alot and really wouldnt drive it like that... otherwise it could get real expensive fast!

Thanks, I am keeping a close watch on the consumption and keeping it topped 2 x per day, so I don't drop past a quarter of the way past the dipstick. Friday is fix it day but wanted any further insight before getting fixated on the sandwich plates.

Your advice is greatly appreciated as I was wondering if there was an even more obvious cause for this problem.

Thanks again, Paul

98% of the time this will be the two flat oil seals sandwiched between the oil adaptor - as The Batman mentioned above

It could also be the O ring in the oil filter lid.

Also worth checking the oil cooler hoses, they are getting quite old these days.

There are other reasons for oil leakages in that area, but due to the amount of oil they are excluded.

I notice from a previous thread you bought some of the graphite sandwich plate gaskets so if you've fitted them then have a look there. I use the graphite ones (although not from that seller) and they're very good but you do have to fit new ones every time it comes apart

Hi

I had the same problem recently and it turned out to be the oil hose into the block, it had worked loose and was spraying pressurized oil all over the filter assembly and the gearbox. Also had it coming out of the vent holes in the engine cover.

Check the sandwich plate first though as everyone says... these are a pain!

Paul if you change the sandwich plate gaskets what you may want to do is clean all the oil off the threads with a de greaser and locktight the bastards 😂 Tightening them well, but make sure the top isn't seized up solid first oh and when re fitting the top you don't need to swing on it as the O ring seals well. That way the next filter change is simply top off and back on. Well that's what I did and it worked for me. 👍 Watch the whole Fecking lot turn again next time now 😂😂😂😂

It took a big vice, 4 pint of penatrating fluid and a set of 24inch Stilsons to get mine off, the Fecking Hulk fitted it 😄

If you have been running low on oil for any length of time, take the cover off the head and check your cams and followers as i had badly scored mine with a mild oil leak.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for sharing your experiences.   I was changing my oil filter this week and the seals are badly damaged.  Have also noted a slow oil leak.

Do you remember where you got the parts from?

Dave

Hi Dave, I sell the graphite ones on here as the originals are no longer available. Material for another batch has just arrived so will be getting them made up in the next few days - Christmas permitting. Drop me pm if you need some, they are £15 a pair including uk delivery.
