I have a similar issue on mine. In the end I installed it and secured an insulating rubber pad between the +ive stud and the manifold. In 7 years I've not had a problem with it grounding out.

Currently carrying out a supercharger conversion on my car and have unfortunately found out that I've got the larger 120 amp alternator. I have removed the cover and cut the positive stud down as far as I can go and after offering it all up I have about 2-3mm clearance between the stud and the inlet manifold. Is this enough ? I am also considering insulating the inlet manifold too.
120A won't fit with the SC manifold; therefore all SC's run with a smaller 100A version and even that you need to modify according the build guides...

It may fit, but that unfused main 12v feed is very close to the metal SC manifold...

Yes it is close about 2-3 mm as I've stated in my original quote. Personally I think whilst also insulating the manifold this will be enough. I was just wondering weather anybody else had done it with the 120 amp alt.It may fit, but that unfused main 12v feed is very close to the metal SC manifold...

I know of 2 SC's here in NL that shorted-out their main unfused power cable to the SC manifold. Not funny when that happens, so be carefull...

I always find that the 120A alternator is physically too big to fit with a SC, the end cap pushes the inlet too far towards the gearbox end and the manifold gasket will not seal.
The red power cable needs careful consideration when installing. It is very easy to tighten it up in the wrong position.

Right, I've had another look and there are two live studs on the alternator:
If I use the blue coloured one (screwdriver pointing at it) then there is loads of clearence between 5 and 10mm at a guess. So my thinking is use the blue coloured stud and insulate the other, can't really see how this is any different to using a 100 A ?

I spent 2-3 weekends over the summer stripping, repairing and rebuilding a car which had suffered a fair catastrophic failure from the alternator live touching the manifold. Stop being a pikey and buy a 100 A alternator.

LOL. I'm finding this job easier than the last kit car I built. Being a tight arse I try to find alternative solutions before buying new parts.the black round end cover (with the green dot) will hit the SC inlet manifold long before the terminal does. A wise person would pay Joe to do all the hard work
