Looking for anything with a strong engine that will pull a trailer around the country. Doesn't need to be massive as trailer and car together are only 1000kg. I recently bought a 1.8 focus cmax for the job and it seems to be sufficient but the death rattle and plumes of blue smoke just a few weeks after purchase mean that it's now only fit for the scrap heap :( Tow bar preferable but not mandatory. There's a million eligible cars on auto trader but having been burnt by a lemon I'd prefer to buy from someone I feel I can trust.

Mitm, I'm sure you would be trust worthy! Mbes, x-trail looks like a good shout. Cheap, big and plentiful. Did you have diesel or petrol? Any weak points to watch for?

I had an Xtrail, a 2002 2 litre petrol. Everything was great except the power, Would imagine you'd want a diesel for towing. They are huge in the back.

I had a T-spec Diesel

As Mark says, it has a big boot and did everything I gave it, miss that truck.. loved it

I had it for ust under a year, only needed battery replaced, everything worked great, heated seats are lush. mine had 98k on clock but drove great. so dont worry about high miles as long as its looked after.

Looks like the same model I've just bought. A 2.2 dci sve complete with the worst sat nav I've ever seen, rust on the wheel arch and sounds like a tractor when cold. It should be a great tow car though with its 2000kg tow capacity.

Thanks mark and thanks for the suggestion. My first choice was actually a Passat tdi estate but it sold before I could get there. Now that I've got the xtrail I'm certain it will be better for towing and better for chucking car stuff in the plastic lined boot, plus I like the fact it's a bit different. The gearbox is a bit notchy but I'm hoping it just needs the clutch bleeding as the pedal doesn't feel right either. Other than that it really hauls on the motorway. Did yours have cruise control? I'm sure the spec sheet in parkers suggested it should have it but can't find the buttons..
