Ever since I bought the car I noticed it had a third gear crunch on down shifts , it's only in 3rd and only on downshifts ! It has a short shift mod on the gearbox and the stick apparently coupled with an h gate selector . Would it just need the cables adjusting or do you think it might be the gearbox ? It does feel a bit odd selecting 3rd it's as if it's not quite going in if that makes sense . Any help would appreciated 👍🏼

Forgot to mention that it doesn't do it every time , it's only when I'm rev matching or driving quick

Worn synchro rings on 3rd gear.  Short shifters increase the load on the synchro rings because the gearchange is pushed through much faster..

Rebuild then ??

Or buy a secondhand box. Plenty on ebay for around £80 to £120 depending on mileage

Try bleed the clutch fluid first , maybe air in the slave cylinder not fully disengaging

Thankyou I'll try the clutch first before swapping out the box

If you go this way do all the synchro rings plus selector forks and bearings.  The forks can wear too so worth doing while the box is in bits.

A rebuild will likely cost more than a second hand box and quite a few have been worse afterwards.

I'd suggest a 2nd hand box with good providence!

A rebuild on my 4.17 was £350 but was a proper rebuild not just replacement of the broken part

Who was it that tried about 2 or 3 rebuilds? Was it Mandy and someone else?

You might want to consider fitting a new clutch slave cylinder when its fitted
