The other option I'm shortlisting is an E92 M3 V8 if anyone has had one to share the experience?

again another peach of an engine - this time at 8k revs. Very much different to the Vx and as a daily not bad but its talents are wasted really. I'd have a B7 RS4 avant as a daily and the Vx for the hoon.

Good car, my brother had one and took me out. Engine has great delivery, and quite punchy upto about 100 leptons, after that it fizzles out a bit as to be expected.

RS4 doesn't really do much for me, and the running costs are even higher (though I am a sucker for an estate lol)

I had a competition pack E92 M3 in about this time last year it was a bit of a hoot. They are very very quick as you would expect and they dont handle too bad for a big old bungalow of a car. One thing though they are completely shocking on fuel. One of the thirstiest cars I've ever driven when pressing on!

From what I've researched it's a more reliable car than the 3.2 lump, and it'll probably drive better than the Z4 but it won't be a classic in the same way. The only thing I'm not fussed on with the M3 is the appalling early sat nav compared to the pro nav I've got in the M135i, but there's a facelift in 2009 with a better system so that'll be a minimum requirement. At least you can buy a Z4MC without nav.

A mate of mine had a Z4M roadster and we did a swap one afternoon on a B road or two. It was a nice car. Pretty much as everyone has mentioned, heavier, slower, worse steering, wallowier (is that a word?!). However, it was pretty much as quick as my 2.2 SC, was a lot plusher and sounded though it had an engine that was designed by engineers instead of something taken from a sewing machine. As a one-car-to-do-it-all I would definately have one. But its cheaper to have a supermini and a VX, and both are better at what they are specifically aimed at doing.

One thing of note. All other Z4s have electric steering and are bloody awful to point anywhere. The Z4Ms have a hydraulic system and are therefore better to hussle and also have fewer mechanical issues as a result. I (similarly to Packs) sold a VX and bought a Z4, and then sold that to get a VX again. My Z4, a 3.0i, had some very weird issues with its steering. Google sticky steering column for Z4s

Definitely will be a ZM if I get one. I'm keeping the VX so this will be my daily driver for work etc.
