Ok - looks like I may lose my company car this year and get an allowance instead and need som help choosing. Looking to spend around 8-10k, and it needs to be family friendly (golf / focus size) Do about 20k a year, so needs to be economical, but most driving is on country roads so needs enough poke to overtake well. I also need it to be fun to drive.... Sensible choice is a focus, but want something a bit different.... current co car is a golf 2.0 diesel, which is great, but may be too much.... Always liked the Alfa Giulietta, but worried about reliability. Needs to run for 3 years, clocking up another 60k.... So, suggestions.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Mate of mine had a Kia Cee'd a couple of years back and it was brilliant to drive, had a huge warranty and was cheap. Just ignore the plastic interior but it was really well put together. Problem you have with your requirement is with 20k per year you'll need a car still fresh after adding 60k, but that means low miles and anything with golf or Audi on it will be higher miles or older for the budget.

I know - that's the challenge.... VAG option does mean higher mileage, but the Alfas are a lot cheaper. Agree about the CEE'd - had one as a company car for a bit and was impressed. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Seat Leon TDI fr. Same underpinning as your golf/a3 but price tag of a focus. They are well built, pokey and efficient. I had one with the btcc or k1 kit on it and it looks stunning. I've now got an Alfa Romeo, however 159 as opposed to a giulietta. I'd have no reservations about reliability, second Alfa I've had without any issues. Same can't be said about my previous Audi a4 with no end of issues so guess its pot luck these days!

Mk6 golf GTD or GTI would be what i'd get. I did 80,000 miles in my GTD and loved it. Little bit noisy, but you can unplug the sound generator which makes them a bit quieter.

You might get into an early Mk7 but i'd go for a nice condition 6 i think.

By comparison, i'm 40k miles into my A6 and i'm properly bored of it.

Also check on that. My company tried to take away my company car and I refused. Was in my contract that they supplied a car and I just said I couldn't afford 2 cars and the vx was going nowhere!

TBH - don't mind the change, there is quite a generous cash alternative... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Wife is looking at Volvo V40's at the moment, as she is wasting her Leon Cupra R on the M1. There are some great deals out there, pretty much a Focus, but abit different.

Are the wishbone ball joints/bushes not known for needing replacement every year or so? Os is that a different issue?

It isn't a focus anymore.

I'd avoid anything VAG, you'll never get a well spec'd car with low miles because they demand a premium. In my opinion a high spec Mondeo is a far better car to drive, comes with way more equipment, is much cheaper to run and will be far cheaper to buy.
